My family and I (husband and children aged 20, 17 and 15) had a wonderful few days in Istanbul over New Year's 2014. We all agreed the absolute highlight of the trip (in a city of highlights) was the food tour we did with Offbeat Istanbul. We ate loads of delicious food and local specialties, some of it in little out of the way places we never would have found as well as from more famous establishments - and our guide, Duygu, was warm, friendly, helpful and very personable. Chatting to her made us feel like we saw a tiny bit of the 'real' Istanbul and made us feel just a little like insiders for awhile. Highly recommend.

In the past four days (Oct 2013), we've enjoyed two distinct walks with two equally wonderful guides, Duygu and Necla, in the Galata/Beyoglu section of Istanbul. Four 60-ish, non-Turkish-speaking adults on a week long visit from the USA spent four-plus hours with Duygu on a combined "orientation/artisan" tour and similar amount of time with Necla on the "short foodie" tour. Both ladies spoke fluent English, were knowledgable about their topics, and clearly adapted their presentations to our interests and prior knowledge as they got to know us during our time together. In the first tour, we were introduced to an interesting and diverse group of artisan-entrepreneurs in the Galata area - ceramics, glass-blowing, instrument-building, furniture restoration ... - in a set of informative visits that bore none of the usual high-pressure sales invitations. In the second tour, we sampled many foods from shops and restaurants in the area, experiencing tastes and textures we'd clearly have missed without Necla's guidance. In addition, both tours provided us with a new-found familiarity with an area and city that only one of us had ever visited (and that over 40 years ago). These tours are wonderful complements to visits to the better-known sites of and most definitely have enriched our experience of the people and city of Istanbul. We all agree that we give the highest recommendation to Offbeat Istanbul and our two guides, Duygu and Necla, and to the experiences they given us!

We have just spent a really lovely time with our guide, Duygu. Her fluent English and charming manner made the tour so relaxed and comfortable. She tailored our day to include our interest in artisanal and historical Istanbul in Beyoglu. We found out good places to eat, to shop for food and to explore where we could find creative and artistic designers selling objects and furniture. On top of that, Duygu showed us history in the streets of Beyoglu and was such a wonderful host we felt we were visiting a friend overseas. We will surely remember it as one of the highlights of our visit to Istanbul.

My friends and I took the Beyoglu orientation tour, starting at Galata Tower. Duygu, our guide, was warm, friendly and knowledgable, and made us feel instantly at home in the city. Spanning the surrounding area down to the Bosphorus river, along the waterfront and back, we explored the nooks and crannies of the Beyoglu area. Duygu tailored the walk to the things we were interested in (food, more food) and the three hours flew by. She showed us a number of places we would have otherwise missed, and afterwards she sent us a list of the local places to check out, which we spent the rest of the trip working through.

It is a great way to acquaint yourself with the city through the eyes of a local, and I highly recommend it.

My family and I took the Beyoglu Orientation tour. This proved to be a great idea as our guide Duygu made as feel comfortable from the word go and showed around areas we would of missed if on our own. We had a 7 year old in our party and Duygu went out of her way to make it interesting for her as well, she thoroughly enjoyed herself and was sad when the tour ended after a very quick 3 hours ( as we all were)..

Lots of top tips for places to eat and great views to be had, all in all a very valuable help in making our stay in Istanbul more enjoyable, highly recommended.
