“An elegant hotel with decent people”
Reviewed August 28, 2013 via mobile

This was my first ever stay at a Wyndham hotel. The Wyndham Kalamis Marina in Kadikoy is located in a central area not far from Bagdat Avenue, a major shopping and lifestyle area in Asian Istanbul. The hotel has excellent facilities, including a nice lobby, comfortable rooms, a beautiful spa and gym and a rooftop pool with panoramic views of the marina. Staff are extremely helpful and courteous although some struggle with English. Both the customer relations manager and the concierge were very helpful in seekig feedback and giving advice. The food manager was apologetic about his staff's skills and promised improved performance in the future. The area around the hotel is very nice and including a neighboring club with an excellent restaurant, a pub, a Magros store and further away there are several cafes, restaurants and fruit and vegetable sellers. Taxis are available from the hotel yet I tried to avoid them whenever possible due to their tendency to take longer routes and to overcharge. This part of Istanbul is modern, clean, nicely designed and is more family-oriented than the older European side. I had a great stay at the Wyndham Kalamis Marina and would definitely return. I will sum it up with the following description "an elegant hotel with decent people."

I have been to Wyndham's rooftop infinity pool and everything was great. The view was excellent and the service was really good. Best place to chill out in Istanbul! You should try their signature cocktail True Blue.

Hotel is new, rebuilt in 2013. It has an old glamour about it, decorated with lots of shiny silver-plates and mirrors. it's glittery and clean. Floors and spotless and carpet is brand new.

Agree that you need a room towards Marina side. I asked for complimentary upgrade, and they gave me view that faced the pool with a tiny Marina view. I was just happy to be away from the city side, where car noise is plenty.

Hotel staff is friendly and speak English very well. Young, good looking staff to draw in more clientele. Not too many guests when I stayed during a work week.

Gym and spa is amazing. Brand new equipment, with anything you need...bosu balls, foam rollers, pilates machine, yoga mats, kettle balls. They have fitness classes everyday, that is included in stay. I didn't take part, as most where in the evenings when I had business dinners.
Only caveat is that fitness center opens at 6:00am, so those with jet-lag can't go earlier.

Breakfast is average. Much better than US standards, but average compared to European standards. They're catered more to meat eaters, especially the hot dishes. You can order egg dishes at your table. And they make great espresso drinks - capuccinno was delicious.

Rooms are spacious and with the latest furniture and fixtxures. Lots of closet space and beds were not too soft or hard.

Location is near right across the street from the Marina, and taxis got there quickly. From IST, took us 1 hour for 65 euros in private car.

Highly recommend this hotel and will stay here next time.

Room Tip: I was on 2nd floor, facing the pool. No street or pool guests noise.

I had my first stay there as a part of company kick off meeting , and would definitely agree it was good place , the rooms are a bit tiny however , but the general concept is cozy boutique hotel was there .

The group attended from different places of the world had struggled to find their way out of the Marine , and it took them fortune to reach where is the action in the city .

So far away from the airport. They claim to be on a marina that at the end you don't even see.
The decor is really bad 1970 kitch so opulent and tasteless. Service is very average. I tried to use the open swimming pool at 20:00 and was refused because they were closing!
The restaurant was really poor not offering any traditional mesas. The service was so slow and really not friendly.
The rooms are very tiny and full of mirrors that give you a sense of bad taste opulence. The AC will work only 10 minutes after you entered the room so you can suffer in the meantime.
Overall very poor and not to reccomend.

Quick summary: this is a comfortable, modern hotel and a good choice if you need to stay on the Asian side of Istanbul. There are still some service glitches with sub-par internet speed, ridiculous charge for extra bottle of water, phone message slip-ups. Not a 5-star experience yet, but could be with improvements.

We were on business on the Asian side of Istanbul, and this hotel was recommended by the local company office. It seems very new and fresh. Tourists might want to stay on the European side for easier access to sights, but this hotel was a 5-minute cab ride to the ferry dock that would take you across to the to the Golden Horn area. It's doable.

Room 111 is a spacious standard room. It has a comfortable, very large queen bed with nice linens, and on the side of the hotel for a semi-view of the Bosphorus. Windows open if you like. All the expected amenities of a good business class hotel, i.e. good-sized in-room safe, iron/board, coffee maker, hairdryer, etc. Very good closet and drawer space.

The decor is a mix of subdued color scheme (pale silver gray) but glitzy (ornate mirrored and silver leaf surfaces everywhere.) Our business colleague had a room in a beige color scheme, but that's about the range of color in the public and guest rooms.

Spacious bathroom with deep bathtub and shower combo, robes/slippers, and nice toiletries.

Excellent housekeeping throughout.

Our rate included a breakfast buffet, which is delicious and quite extensive. A large array of hot and cold dishes were very tasty suited to a variety of tastes. There was also an extensive selection of olives and vegetables, a large selection of excellent pastries and breads, cereals, yogurt, fruits and juices, etc. They would also cook eggs to order, which was appreciated, very good, and recommended as the scrambled eggs in the chafing dish were a sloppy mess. The serving staff in the restaurant are very good -- professional and friendly, and communicate in English well.

We had dinner at the poolside cafe one evening. It was good, but there are also other good restaurants in easy walking distance in town and at the marina. The restaurant's wine list has many nice choices, especially the rose wine from Turkey -- perfect on a warm night!!

I had time to try the outdoor pool, which is in a nice setting and table service if you want snacks or drinks. Unfortunately, it does not seem to be heated, which made things a bit chilly in late May and early June. There is also an indoor pool in the spa, which I did not try. They also need to double-check that all of the pool umbrellas are working properly.

There are a few things that keep this hotel from achieving 5-star status, but it is new and maybe the management just needs to re-think and fine-tune the operations and policies. Some issues are more annoying than others:

1. Slow, unrealiable internet service. Kiss of death for business travelers.

2. Unbelievably cheap policy on supplying bottled water. Each guest gets one smallish size bottle per room per night. When we called housekeeping for more, we were told that we could order it through room service or get it from the minibar (very small bottle) at a ridiculous charge. Unless the hotel can clearly state that the tap water is safe to drink (no indication of that anywhere,) this is an exceptionally stingy policy that I have not encountered in other hotels where I've stayed in Istanbul. We got 4 medium-sized bottles for 1 TL at a nearby convenience store.

3. Phone messages left at the desk by local colleagues did not get through to our room.

4. The desk staff are well-meaning and friendly, but lack some of the polished operations that I expect at a 5-star hotel, e.g. wait times seem longer than they should be; restaurant suggestions seem to draw blanks other than suggestions for general areas.

5. There are signs directing you to shops, but they are largely not installed yet, i.e. no sundries shop, and they expect a leather shop to open. The spa seemed to be in full swing.

The hotel is located in the marina district on the Asian side. This feels like an upscale area that combines business and residential, and has many options for restaurants, shopping, sundries. etc.

The cab ride from the airport could take 25 minutes very early in the day with little traffic, or well over an hour with heavy traffic. Plan accordingly. The hotel arranged for a car service to pick me up at the airport for 90 euros, which was fine when I am still jet-lagged, and that went smoothly. We got a cab for the return for about 65-70 euros.

So, I would consider staying here again, and hope that the issues get worked out before too long.
