We went for the 1,5 hours trip up Bosphourous. It was a great relief to get away from all the noices and the heat in the city center. Here there were a fresh brize and we found good rest for our feet.
We had heardabout boattrip slasmen on the street that really took you out on a trip: going with taxis to collect people from various placec to fill up the boat, several stops, spending many hours, but not seeing much. Our hotel told us to use this company. Theywereright!
Here one bought tickets on the harbor, next to Galatabridge, costs almost nothing, boats running all the time and good service on board. Great view og beautiful housesand great buildings! Two bridges up.

The 1.5 hr cruise is the best.. Boat cruises along the Bosphorus strait. A guy comes around offering snacks and drinks. I paid 1 TL for tea which was great! It was crowded on the upper deck but you can just stand in front of the boat which is way better than sitting and constantly turning your head.

We went on this boat today and had a lovely time. There is no commentary that we could hear but for the time spent on the water it was fine. Sit on the left hand side of the boat. It travels quiet close to the shore so you get good views. There is the option to buy apple tea etc on board for 1 lira. There is an open top part and a covered bottom part. Cost 12 lira each and we were on the boat for 1hr 30mins. Thoroughly enjoyed and would recommend.

We just returned from Turkey and took the 1.5 hour Turyol cruise with our two teenaged sons (ages 15 & 18). We looked at ALL the options (including the high priced guided tours that are priced in Euros) and this just simply worked for our family.

The 12 TL ($7 USD) price COULD NOT BE BEAT. We could carry food on board (we bought cheese and olives in the spice market just a few blocks from the dock, almost took fish sandwiches aboard as they are sold right next to the ticket booth, and carried bottles of water) and we purchased tea on board (a guy comes around) for 2 TL a cup. Also, we appreciated that it was REALLY easy to just walk up to the Turyol dock and get tickets and walk on board. No reservations needed. We could swing down there when it fit our schedule so we didn't have to rush through our day to try to make a specific timetable, and we were able to do it on the warmest, sunniest day.

The tour was "absolutely enough". You go up to the second bridge which is where the fortresses of Europe and Asia are. Those were probably the most interesting things on the trip. Other than that, we found the traffic on the Bosphorus to be very interesting (you would swear your boat is going to crash a couple of times). It zig zags back and forth and goes up one side and down the other.

My husband and teenagers and I all agreed 1.5 hours was ENOUGH for a Bosporus Tour. Are the buildings you see along the way really all that interesting? No, not really. 1.5 hours to see Istanbul from the water, see a few palaces, a few mansions, 2 bridges, the Golden Horn, the fortresses and all the boats is plenty. Mostly I think you just need the experience of being on the Bosporus. While it might have been neat to be able to go up and see the Black Sea, we all agreed that there is no way we would want to spend an entire day on the boat, looking at basically uninteresting shoreline to get there. Also realize that there is a strong current on the Bosporus, so the ferries and boats have BIG engines. So consider how many hours you want to be listening to huge engines thrumming along.

The Turyol does have loudspeakers that were probably giving commentary, but we could never understand it as we sat outside. There are audioguides you can rent when you buy your tickets, but we didn't. My Rick Steve's Istanbul guidebook detailed everything we saw with great detail and written commentary.

We sat outside, on a day in early April that was really very warm on shore, and it was COLD on the water! So really consider taking along a coat or jacket unless the weather is really sweltering. We could have sat inside, but then I don't think we would have seen things as well. I imagined we'd be sitting in the sun, getting tans, but the reality is that you're on benches along the side of the cabin, facing the water and the side of the boat, so we were never really in the sun.

Also, it's worth noting that my husband used the bathroom and came back horrified. He said it was awful smelling, and was a squat toilet with no toilet paper. I nearly died laughing at the thought of him on a rocking boat trying to squat in filth and do #2. So find a bathroom to use BEFORE you get on the boat.

If you want a description of all the options available and how to do them, including the municipal ferry system and even taking the bus back, consult the Rick Steve's Istanbul guidebook as it has an excellent discussion of how exactly to do each one.
