“Lucky to get 2 guided tours off the tourist beaten tracks”

I did Fener and Balat with Serhat and visited lots of hidden places, most of which are closed or impossible to find when you try to do them by yourself (churches, a splendid restored cistern...). Serhat's sense of humour wasn't bad either... After I had a wonderful evening in lots of little cafés and restaurants (surprizing foods...). And then I walked through the most particular places (and heard again lots of anecdotes) with the funny and cheerful Sanem...days to remember!

“Group guided tours, or private tour if you get the right day”
Reviewed July 29, 2013

Istanbul Walks were affiliated with our hotel, Sikeci Konak (see other reviews). We booked a €50 p.p. full day group tour, including tickets and lunch. The maximum group was 15 people and we were pretty happy with the price seeing as tickets are €22 alone and lunch at least €8.

We were picked up from the hotel by our guide, Yuke Celik at 8.30 and told that, because July and August is off season (because of the temperature), we were the only people on the tour. Private tours are usually €100 p.p. + tickets and lunch, so we were very pleased with our good fortune.

Yuke was lovely and dragged us to all of the major sites (Hagia Sofia, Topkapi Palace, Blue Mosque, Hippodrome). But because it was a small group, she also took us to a couple of places off of the beaten path including a very welcome tea stop so that we could escape the heat for a while. Her knowledge was amazing, as was her English.

Also included is transport between the longer stretches between sites, by air-conditioned mini-bus - worth the money all by itself!

Lunch was traditional Turkish fare and was very tasty.

The company provides a whole host of other tours. When we return to Istanbul, we will certainly book with them again.

“Excellent tours.”
Reviewed June 23, 2013

My 2nd year doing a tour with Istanbul Walks. And as last year, excellent tours again. I did the Dolmebahce Palace and the Dining Out tour with Yuke Celik, and also Princes Island with Sanem. All great tours with very knowledgeable guides. The difference from last year is that this year they pick you up from your hotel, which is an improvement. The dining out tour was different from the other tours, but also very good. I had eaten plenty of great food in Istanbul before, but this tour gave me an opportunity to go to different types of places and sample different types of food and atmosphere. Especially enjoyed the game of OK in the coffee house (Where we drank tea).

“Dinner tour is a great way to get to know to Istanbul”
Reviewed May 29, 2013

We booked the nighttime food tour for our first night in Istanbul, knowing that we wouldn't be fully settled in yet and hoping that the tour would help us get our bearings while taking care of dinner.

The tour greatly exceeded our expectations. The hotel pickup was trouble free and right on time. Our guide Selma was very knowledgeable and sociable, providing context for everything while taking us to experiences we wouldn't have known how to find on our own.

We started the evening eating a simit and drinking tea at a traditional teahouse, where Selma taught us a typical Turkish tile game. (It was neat later in the trip to see locals playing the game!) Then we had a quick walking tour of the very happening Istikal district, before popping in to a restaurant for meze, kebabs, and a tasting of raki.

The food was excellent and we never would have guessed from the look of the ground floor that the restaurant had a gorgeous modern enclosed terrace.

Afterwards Selma took us through a few more of the nightlife areas before a stop for kokorec (just eat it and don't ask questions - it's delicious) and then another stop at a meyhane for Efes beer, a dessert of melons and cheese, and live Gypsy music.

Right before midnight we capped off the evening with the traditional finish to a Turkish night out, a bowl of tripe soup. We were then dropped off right at the door of our Sultanahmet hotel.

Completely worth the money.
