There are a few restauarants right opposite Cankurtaran train station and they may be good. But just around the corner, right at the end of Cankurtaran St, is Onbasilar Barbeku and we found it to be excellent. The spruiker out the front was as cheery and insistent as all the others but he turned out to be a good waiter and, presumably, part of the family that run the restaurant.
There are tables outside and some across the street but we chose the table inside at the front. The entire front of the building opens so we were, in effect, outside. It was a nice, elevated spot on a warm summer's life to watch life go by.
Just inside the door is a free-standing charcoal grill and the cook there does wonderful things with bits of meat and vegetables before your very eyes. As part of our entrees we had a carrot dip. Never had anything like it before and it was excellent.
A nice bottle of wine, too much good food and a pleasant environment made for an excellent evening.
ps It's worth going for a wander down this part of town whether you eat there or not. Although it's only about 500 metres from Hagia Sofia it is like another world. Although not entirely off the tourist trail it is a surprise how different it is to the more popular areas.
