“not recommend this hotel.”
Reviewed April 25, 2013

We arrived at 10 pm at the hotel, we were three families, with reservation by booking in February 2013 but the manager told us that no rooms available. We were all moved to another hotel not too far away, the next day they gave us three totally different rooms we booked (we had a room just 10 sq m). The third day we changed rooms with some rooms closer to the tank. Breakfast was poor. Price per room was 63 euro not refundable, per night, per room. The area is interesting with fish restaurants, a bit noisy because of the music, but it is ok. personally do not recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: do not choose room 302

We booked the hotel over a month ago and also took the transfer service. I wrote them once again on the day we were supposed to arrive and reminded them about the transfer service. When we got to the airport, there was no transfer. We waited and waited and finally called to the hotel. So about an hour in the airport in the middle of the night and finally somebody picked us up. When we got to the hotel they announced that they don't have any rooms and we have to go another hotel which was a bit weird. The other hotel wasn't too far and was ok (I would recommend the other hotel called Lancelot). In the morning we were asked to go back in the Kumkapi and this time they said they're cleaning the rooms and we should have breakfast first and then our rooms will be ready. We dined for about an hour and still our rooms weren't ready! So we decided to leave them the luggage and go to the city. We returned at about 9 in the evening and I + my partner got a key with a promise to get another room in the morning. The room we got was ridiculous! When we entered the room, it was basically a bed and nothing else! No space to keep our things, no space to move around. The bathroom was tiny as well. I went to ask for a room I was paying for (Standard room) but the hotel staff seems to think there’s no difference between economy and standard and refused to return the sum I overpaid. Instead they offered to bring us a fruit platter. Anyway, the third night I finally got a room I booked. So 3 nights and all in different rooms! I would NOT recommend it to anybody! The only good thing is proximity to sights and restaurants (though restaurants are quite noisy at night).

yes pictures overate the hotel. Big bathroom, shower pressure was excellent with loads of hot water, but unlike the large bathrooms, the double rooms are silly small just no where to stand! not ideal if you're travelling with 3 or more people. Having said that, this is miles better than a hostel and the location is lively until around 2am, but not suitable for people expecting an actual premium 3 star hotel, this is a boutique hotel. It was clean throughout. Staff were very helpful. Breakfast was great with nice views of Fatih and the Bosphorus! Rooftop would be great in summer I'm sure - which i guess is when it opens.

We stayed in Kumkapi Konagi hotel for 5 nights. We knew that the hotel was new and thus it had so few reviews (no review on TA, just a few on Booking.com) but we decided to give it a chance and it was a huge mistake. Here are the cons:

1. Pictures on their website don't show the real standard of the rooms! The hotel is new but rooms are already dirty (see my pictures) – dust in the corners, hair in the sink, unpleasantly smelly bathroom (from pipes, I guess). Towels were stained and they weren't changed even once during our 5-night stay! Low water pressure, problems with hot water.

2. On the hotel website you can read that if you stay 5 nights or longer you will get the following: “free welcome cocktail; free safe box; free fruit basket; free transfer from Atatürk Int. Airport to hotel” (quote from their website) and if you pay in cash you get 5% discount. The ONLY thing we got was the transfer. According to the owner we weren't also entitled to get the 5% discount - we had to choose free transport OR the discount, although there was nothing like that on their website. They think they can write anything on their website just to lure clients, promise bargains and then offer next to nothing. We weren't offered any “welcome cocktail” or any “free safe box” and after some rather unpleasant conversation during the check-in (we arrived late at night) we didn’t want to argue about that anymore.

3. The hotel is very far from the main touristy sites, their website says Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque are 10 mins walking from the hotel and it's another complete lie! We are a young couple so we can walk quite fast but it took us more than 20 mins to get to those two!

4. On their website we also found: “Complimentary breakfast is served in our Terrace Restaurant” but THERE WAS NO terrace restaurant (we stayed in September)! We ate breakfast in the lobby. Couldn’t they just write on the website that the restaurant is under construction?! We would have chosen some other hotel that was not having any ongoing renovations.

5. The view from our room was horrible - on some kind of narrow space with grey dirty walls and somebody's windows just about 3 meters away from our window! It was very noisy, we could hear trains and very loud restaurant music (to approx. 2:00 am). Sleeping with the window open was almost impossible without ear plugs, not to mention the smell coming from that “place”.

6. The staff speaks very poor or no English, only the owner speaks a bit - this creates some huge communication problems when you need to ask for something and he is not around.

Pros:

1. Close to many fish restaurants and to the Kumkapi train station.

2. There was one nice employee who didn't speak a word in English but was very helpful, he gave us an umbrella when it was raining and lent us a city map (they don't offer free maps for tourists).

3. Tasty breakfast although the same every day and no juice.

I gave 2/5 points because in my opinion only the worst properties deserve 1/5 – it could have been worse, in the Konagi there weren't any cockroaches, breakfast was ok so they still have the chance to become a decent budget hotel. They need to learn English, respect clients more and stop writing untruth on their website. Right now I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone.

Room Tip: There is no lift.
