We are working aboard a cruise ship as guest entertainers and happened across this quaint hotel very close to the port where the ship was docked. We, as most people working onboard a ship do, were looking for a place with coffee and wi-fi and found the sub hotel, we decided to go in and ask if they had wifi, the girl on the front desk spoke excellent English and was very friendly and welcoming as we're all the staff who work there. We intended to stay for 1 hour and ended up staying for 3, all the time we felt safe, we were not hounded to buy more drinks, the background music is very laid back, great American songbook music (Ella Fitzgerald, Sinatra etc) creating a relaxing atmosphere. We happened to be there as they were celebrating a step up on their rating on trip advisor and they had a mini celebration with a cake that they shared with us. We obviously can't comment on the rooms (so disregard the rating) as we didn't stay here but if it is the same quality of the cafe and lobby they should be very nice. We returned the next day for more wifi and coffee and were provided once again with excellent service, we mentioned we hadn't eaten breakfast yet and they brought us 4 large pastries and cheese & salsa filled tortillas, completely free of charge! The reason for the 4 rating on location is that it is situated on a street that is a little bleak which makes this hotel front stand out like a diamond, its a little out of the way of the main hustle and bustle of the city centre so, to go sight seeing etc requires a taxi or public transport, but, it is the perfect location for boarding a cruise ship as it is very close to the port (around 5 mins walk) assuming the cruises all dock at this same port, (unsure of this as it was our first time in Istanbul, but from experience cruises normally dock at the same port every time as the berth is designed for them). To conclude, this hotel provided everything we required and more if we happen to dock in the port of Istanbul on another occasion, our return to this establishment will be a certainty.

This was my first visit to Istanbul. TheSuB Hotel exceeded my expectations. I knew the location was terrific for sightseeing, (It is within walking distance of many sites) but I had no idea how great the area along with a superb service, really was. Upon our arrival we were offered a free drinks in the lounge, while our check-in was completed in a breeze with luggage already waiting for us in the room. A nice young gentleman took time for us to tell about the hotel, showed us a map of Istanbul, asked what we would like to see and do, and circled the sites, restaurants, transportation etc. I felt like we had our own personal concierge. He was enormously helpful. It was a wonderful way to start the visit. Everyone at the desk was helpful as well. They checked flights, told us how to get tickets to events and even gave us a box of Turkish Delight candy when we left. It is a special hotel and a wonderful city. I would highly recommend it and will stay there if I return.

I had the chance to stay 5 nights at the Sub Hotel in Nov. 2012 and I received a great service all the way through my stay. The hotel in itself is a small boutique hotel, you feel like home the minute you step in. The staff is young, personable, helpful and delicate. The bedroom I stayed in was very cute, great decoration, confortable. The only thing that was missing was a light above the dressing area. The location of the hotel is ok. It's close to the tram station and you can walk easily to trendy restaurants. The street of the hotel is a bit sketchy but once you are back in the hotel, you feel very good. Breakfasts are good althought I would have enjoyed more bread or pastries.
I recommend this hotel for a short or long stay in Istanbul.
The staff make it all. Very professionnal and friendly.

What we liked very much was the hospitality, the very friendly staff and the fact all our requests were met diligently and promptly :
- taxi transfers from and to the airport were flawless
- they booked tickets for the whirling dervishes show with very good seats
- we asked for a french speaking guide to visit the old city and the day after we had a great knowlegeable guide speaking perfectly french ("çagdas" was his name) ready to start.

Moreover, the staff made us a very kind surprise for the birthday of my daughter by offering a cake with candles during the breakfast and singing "happy birthday ...". So kind.

The hotel is also very well located and therefore very convenient to visit any places of Istanbul with proximity to a tram station.

As the hotel is near a busy street and a mosque (there are so many in istanbul) the sleep quality is average but remains acceptable.

Overall this is an hotel I would strongly recommend to my friends.

The hotel was chic and modern and the staff made us feel very welcome.
For breakfast we could choose what to eat and it was great.
The staff helped us with sightseeing and what ever we needed help with.
We can highly recommend Sub hotel for anyone that wants to stay at a modern, fresh and yet small and cosy hotel.

While I really wanted to love this hotel upon booking it, I walked away with a feeling that it was just average given the value for money. While the rooms were modern, the bathrooms were disproportionately small compared to the size of the room, and I mean ridiculously small (i.e. you have to straddle the toilet to get out of the shower). The wi-fi in the room was spotty and constantly disconnected us and the hotel faced onto a very busy street and a mosque (which has the call to prayers at 6am). There are no extras (fitness room, hammam etc) so it's pretty bare bones. While the breakfasts were good, this place did not merit $200USD per night. I'm sure there are better places to stay with better value for your money.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Given the boggling variety of architectural and design styles that crowd the eye in Istanbul, perhaps we shouldn’t be surprised to find the industrial-chic SuB Hotel in Karaköy (née Galata), the ancient commercial and cultural core of the city. And yet, let’s be honest: it is a bit of a surprise. SuB Hotel, quirky capitalization and all, looks more like a place you’d find in Greenpoint (Brooklyn) or Neukölnn (Berlin) than in the oldest part of one of history’s great crossroads of civilizations. ... more   less
