A great place to walk across the Golden Horn and take in all the sights and sounds of this part Istanbul. There are piers on each side where boats can take you on trips around the Bosphorus. The Istanbul Tram runs through the centre of the road on the bridge. The tram goes from Zeytinburnu near the airport, to Kabatas, near Dolmabahce Palace. Discover ways to get from Sultanahmet to Taksim and vice versa...

The bridge has a great atmosphere, crowds, food vendors selling corn in the cob, shops on the underpass selling all your designer fake, the bridge has restaurants on the walkway underneath and local fishermen catching fish to sell direct to the restaurants. The views in the evening as the sun goes down is amazing.

But beware. On the bridge you will find the shoe shine guys. They have a trick whereby they walk past you and drop a brush, you then pick it up and alert them. They thank you most graciously and offer a free shine and then to whomever is with you. They then tell you of their family and ask for money at the end. I seen this happen several times and when it happened to me I lifted the brush and walked off with it, he then came running to me and I offered to sell him a new brush, supply and demand, commerce at its simplest. I gave him the brush back and not a single lira was conned out of me.

Another Tip: Check to see if you need a Visa. From UK travellers this is £20 Bank of England notes only or 25€. If you don’t have this then the exchange booths will help but the rates are not good. I fell into this trap and it took 30min to resolve, by which time I then passed through passport control to find the baggage carousel had closed and it then took 20min to find my bag at the uncollected desk.

The Galata Bridge connects Old Istanbul with Taksim and attracts loads of tourists as well as locals, including fishermen.
It is possible to walk underneath the bridge where we were told houses a number of eateries, but we didn't actually go below. With hindsight, we should have booked a longer stay in Istanbul as there is so much to see and do.

Such a vibrant area 1 hour cruises around the bospherous, Close to spice market.. great selection of restaurants under the bridge. walk across and enjoy the sight of young lads fishing and check out the tower, a busy area to enjoy the atmosphere of this amazing city. As most can see the area in question is a bridge that spans the "Golden Horn". The underside of this bride ingeniously houses many different businesses catering mostly to tourists. Take from that what you will.

There have been at least FIVE different versions of this bridge since its original undertaking. In the1500's Sultan Bayezid II solicited a design by none other than Leonardo da Vinci, utilizing three well-known geometrical principles, the pressed-bow, parabolic curve and keystone arch, created an unprecedented single span 240 m (790 ft) long and 24 m (79 ft) wide bridge for the Golden Horn, which would have become the longest bridge in the world of that time, had it been constructed. However, the ambitious design was not approved by the Sultan...

As a tourist that lusts for great architecture this bridge is quite interesting! During my stay I took a number of trains and taxi's over the top. I took a Bosphorus cruise under. But I did not actually visit the business built into this structure. So my review is based upon my experience with the structure and not my interaction with a "touristy area". There are so many of touristy areas around the city of Istanbul I actively chose to avoid this one. So HIGH marks for a great visual and functional space with an INCREDIBLY RICH history. Low marks for the "touristy" elements.
