“The Bridge”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 9, 2013

Walking The Galata Bridge is a colourful experience, so many people fishing, or selling an array of stuff. The traffic is unbridled. The bridge connects The Golden Horn district to Old Istanbul. Under the bridge are many restaurants.

“It's interesting, hardly unmissable”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 7, 2013

So you may be wondering - what is it about this bridge that makes people rave about it like they do? Why did one user give it a higher rating than he gave the Sistine Chapel? I'm afraid that having been there, I'm not sure either, but it's still pretty good.

Apart from its capability to get you across the Golden Horn while remaining dry, the main feature of the bridge is a lower level that has been filled with restaurants. The key selling point with all of these is the idea of the grilled fish sandwich, which they almost all sell for about five lira at the moment - eating one of these has, one way or another, become the thing to do here. Like most touristy places in Istanbul, the restaurants have guys out front keen to get you into their businesses - fair enough, and not a problem - if that puts you off, I think Istanbul as a whole would be a struggle. Aside from that, I didn't get the impression these were the best restaurants in the world - there's a difference between a fresh fish smell and a not too fresh fish smell, and a number of these places had the latter. I ate at a place right next to the bridge where I saw locals eating - everyone that I saw in a restaurant on the bridge looked like a tourist.

If you walk along the top, the sides are lined with people fishing, which makes for some good pictures. There's also the usual assortment of bread and chestnut vendors.

So, there you go - it's a bridge with pretty good view, some restaurants you probably shouldn't eat in, and a bunch of fishermen. It's pretty cool, and you might as well walk across it at least once while you're there, but don't expect anything too magical.

“To add local colour cross it on Sundays!”

You will enjoy an excellent view and the locals that go to fish from the bridge. Buy a Banana while you cross and head to the Egyptian market for lunch on a typical cafe.

“Watch the Sunset with a Fish Sandwich”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 21, 2013

This is a really lovely place to go to watch the sunset over the Sulemayine mosque and eat a cheap fish sandwich from one of the rocking boats. Definitiely one of my defining memories of Istanbul, the fish sandwiches were great and the view was even better.

“Excellent for evening walk!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 16, 2013

Nothing can beat a walk through this bridge at twilight... People catching fish with fish rods is a common scene..the restaurants underneath the bridge are really expensive.. But the atmosphere and view from those restaurants are just amazing...
