“Grand, Not Quite”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 23, 2013

If you look at the website of this hotel, the interiors look great. However, in person, the hotel is a little bit ordinary. One issue I have about this hotel are its hallways. The hotel uses motion detection to switch on and off the lights at the hallways. So, you may step out of the elevator or climb the stairs and be greeted with darkness; the atmosphere can be a little bit depressing and you may have a feeling of a little unease walking those halls.

However, we loved the swimming pool at the basement. The water is absolutely amazing and the place is spartanly clean. They offer Turkish bath at the adjacent room, albeit, very small.

The hotel is about 10 minutes walk to Istikal Avenue. And about 20-25 minutes walk to cross the Galata Bridge to go to Sultanahmet area.

We spent 1 week at the "Grand" Hotel Halic from July 12 till July 19th, 2013. Th room was clean and the bed was changed every day.
It is all very 'dated', it needs adjustment to modern time.
At the lobby was only 1 (one!) lady who spoke English. The other staff just looked and stared at us when we asked something.
Breakfast was an every day repeating happening. No variation, but the same food every morning: bread, cheese, sausages, eggs boiled as hard as a stone (and green), jam, sweet bread, yoghurt, peaches, pineapple, dried apricots (with fruitflies for free), cereal, 2 kind of soups etc.etc.

The location of the hotel is o.k., close to the Sishane metro station, at walking distance from Istlal C., Karakoy and the Galatatower.
So if you really want to make more profit, Managementteam: start planning a reorgnisation & upgrade!!!

i am reviewing this hotel based on other hotels i visited with the same number of stars..
first of all, the desk was very helpful and smiling, we were upgraded to a room facing the sea because there was no rooms left ( thank god ), the view was amazing we were very happy.

the rooms were small but enough considering we only came back to it at night, barely able to walk freely with the luggage on the floor, but as i said, good enough.

the white bed sheets were sticky, from beneath, i didnt dare peel them off, i just slept ontop after i took out the covers from the closet.
there was glass cups but no water or water heater or anything.

the bathroom was clean i guess, nice hot water, we ordered extra towels and we got them pretty quick. room service in general was good.

the location is great, just couple steps from galata tower and istiklal street, and we were able to walk to everywhere ( i prefer walking to discover the city, and it was an easy walk for me and my parents ( 60 yo ) to walk from it to hagia sophia and surroundings, bazaars and so on.. )

the windows do not isolate the sound very much, we were able to hear everything down in the street, and at 6 in the morning there was street works and the machines just couldn't let us sleep from the sound.

acs were working great.

wifi in rooms is just terrible, i had signal from floor above me and not my own floor, i had to leave my room and go sit in the lobby everytime i wanted connection.

based on what i paid, i wouldnt expect more, i was somewhat happy i can't lie bout that, it was enough to come back to after a long day walking, receptionist was very nice and allowed us to make free phonecall, they ordered us taxis when we wanted also.

i cant say i wouldn't recommend people to go there, it's GOOD ENOUGH FOR WHAT I PAID.
unless you can get a better option for the same amount of money or even bit more, i say go for it.

Room Tip: -pay more if you can to get rooms at the sea view.. you wont regret it and it will add to your exper...

Hotel
It’s a fine hotel close to Taksim Square

Associate
They are unfriendly, unhelpful and some very rude as a 4star hotel it’s shocking the way treating the guest they never greet you. All of them they just staring at you from the reception up to the restaurant so poor hospitality and when you go to reception asking question or assistant the way they talking to you it’s like they doing the favour and you prefer to ask somewhere else or find out on the internet

Minibar
Be careful about minibar they will charge you even if you didn’t consume anything

Room Service
During the night nothing is available from the menu

Transport
Metro and bus stop close bay

On a busy road in an elevated position over the Golden Horn. It feels a bit odd with a sex shop next door but it's very convenient for bars, restaurants nightlife etc of İstiklal Caddesi area and close to Tunel and Metro and 10 mins to tramline. Room was a bit dingy it was long and thin so you couldn't see tv from the bed and had to sit in front of tv if you needed to watch it. Food a bit boring and repetetive

This hotel was chosen by our tour company as part of a Grand Tour of Turkey. We opted to come to Istanbul a few days before the tour started and not wanting to transfer hotels, we chose to stay in the Grand Halic for those nights as well. At that time, we upgraded our room to a suite on the front of the hotel with a view of the Golden Horn. It was quite nice and comfortable and we enjoyed the scene from our window immensely. At the end of the tour, we returned to the hotel for two nights and our accommodations were less classy...a small, cramped room buried in the back of the hotel. We missed our view of the Golden Horn! The breakfast buffet had a nice selection of both cold and hot dishes and we enjoyed the good coffee. This hotel's location is a real plus...we walked to everything including the sites across the Bosphorus, the restaurants and shops behind the hotel and the beautiful İstiklal Caddesi. We would not hesitate to recommend this hotel, but would suggest you book a room with a view!

Booked in at 9pm and headed to the restaurant. They were ready to close but opened for my partner and I and proceeded to prepare and cook what turned out to be the best meal we had in all of Turkey. Panoramic views of Old Instanbul and the Bosphorus from the rooftop restaurant.
