If you love a walk and watching the world go by then take a trip here. It is packed with restaurants and bars and there are many places to shop. Fab if you like to photograph people and places. It can get very busy so be prepare for the crowds.

I hate the touristy parts of this area, really. I mean, Istiklal Street is always nuts and why would I travel thousands of mile to eat at Burger King?! It is cool when you see protests and such but it is more of a "first time in Istanbul" site for me. However, when I have been lucky enough to go to dinners with locals, friends of a family that I stayed with (and absolutely adore) in Istanbul, right around Taksim Square and WOW. The apartment was art deco and like a page out of Turkish Vogue (if that even exists). A highlight of my multiple trips to Turkey to this very day!

We loved this area. Certainly there are plenty of the historical places to see in Istanbul but this is clearly a place where local people like to go out and about to shop, to be seen, and to eat. We did not try reaching this area by foot and instead took the funicular tram. The same jeton that works on the tram does not entitle you transfer to the funicular system meaning you need 2 jetons to reach this area by public transportation. This works out to be 6 Turkish lira. If we had had more time in Istanbul or if we had not done as much walking, I would have considered making the walk at least down the slope to the main tram system.

If you are coming to Istanbul to shop or see the sites, then you can't miss going to Beyoglu. Once you enter Taksim Square, look for the Burger King and you will be headed in the right direction for the shopping portion. Going down Istiklal is like going through any major International Shopping Mall - there is a little of everything for everyone. For the really good deals, go down towards the end of the road (called Tunel) and try some of the side streets for some really good clothing deals. While a lot of these shops offer wonderful prices, these are selling "seconds," so just look the product over real good to make sure there is nothing glaringly wrong with the item. For the most part, you can find name-brand items that are very presentable, and at a fraction of their normal cost. If you don't like playing the "checking game" with seconds, there are many other shops up and down the main Istiklal street to please anyone. It does get a little crowded during the normal "Rush Hour" times, but if you are coming on vacation, then go in the mid-morning, or mid-afternoon, and you will be able to leisurely stroll down the street and pick and choose the shops to visit.
