Owner description: Famed architect Sinan built this majestic structure for one of the greatest rulers of the Ottoman Empire. Although this mosque is less ornate, there are many similarities between it and the Hagia Sophia since the same architect was responsible for both.

the mosque in itself is really nice but the most spectacular thing is the sorrouding garden and the view that you have on the side of the mosque all over the city. pity that the mausoleums with the tombs were closed for renovation.

The mosque is a bit of an uphill walk from the Spice Market areas of town (or a less uphill walk from the Grand Bazaar area. We found that this was a little less crowded that the Blue Mosque and Hafia Sofia, so we enjoyed it and it had nice location that had some views of the Bosphorous. The interior was a little less elaborate than the Blue Mosque, but impressive and a nice contrast as well.

Ask your guide to explain the significance of the number of minarets and the number of balconies on them. You will better appreciate the Suleymaniye Mosque. Quite a bit better than the Blue Mosque

Since my husband's background is architecture, this was a must. We were both moved by it's elegant beauty. Truly a great way to appreciate Sinan's genius and not as packed with tourists as other sites.

Probably the most visited, after the Blue Mosque, and certainly the most spectacular mosque in Istanbul. Huge and beautiful. You already know it is a must see. There is also a great online "virtual tour" of it that is available if you google for it. Not like being there, but including some shots that you probably won't see in person. The architect was the real master.
