Owner description: Famed architect Sinan built this majestic structure for one of the greatest rulers of the Ottoman Empire. Although this mosque is less ornate, there are many similarities between it and the Hagia Sophia since the same architect was responsible for both.

Absolutely beautiful mosque, inside and out. Whatever renovations were done, I'm glad they were finished by the time I visited. It was bright and clean and full of gorgeous mosaics and architecture. A much better visit than the Blue Mosque.

This is perhaps the most beautiful of Mosque's that I have been in - such a stunning building with such a fabulous interior. The colours are so bright and in general inside feels bright and alive.

The dome above this mosque seems to float on thin air. It is cool, quiet and beautiful inside - the stained glass is worth a visit on its own.

The Suleymaniye Mosque has something I hadn't seen with any other site visited in Istanbul (The Hagia Sohpia for example) yet- really great bathrooms. It might sound like a funny thing to appreciate, but when you're visiting crowded tourist destinations and you gotta go, it makes a difference when you find nice, clean restrooms. Asides from that, it would still be a must-see for anyone in Istanbul. It's right down the street from Istanbul University, so the roads leading to and from The Suleymaniye Mosque, particularly the road toward the Grand Bazaar, are easily accessible, quiet (which for Istanbul roads is saying something) and easy to navigate. I actually got to the Mosque right as prayer was beginning, didn't want to wait for it to finish- so I went in and did prayer. That's the first time I've ever done prayer, so I think I have some bragging rights. That's one of the cool things about the historic mosques of Istanbul- they're still mostly all functional as spiritual places and they're very peaceful and feel very comfortable.

We tried four times in one day to get into this mosque and each time there were different prays happening. We looked up the times in advance but this didn't seem to make any difference! Eventually we made one last attempt to get inside before heading back and we were so pleased we did. It is staggering. The outside grounds are wonderful too and do make sure you have a proper look around.

You could do this mosque first then head to the grand bazaar which is nearby, but give yourself a lot of time for both. And make sure you wear comfy shoes!! You will be doing A LOT of walking...
