“Excellent Location, Helpful Staff, Quiet Rest”
Reviewed March 30, 2014

We chose this hotel because of the good reviews in Tripadvisor and found them to be completely accurate: Helpful staff, great location, wonderful breakfast in a scenic setting, comfortable beds. We would stay there again!

Excellent location in the historic area of Istanbul with an attentive staff who spoke English well and were helpful with airport transfers. The included breakfast offers insights into what the locals eat, several types of olives, feta and goat cheese, a variety of cold cuts, rolls, cucumbers, tomatoes, yogurt and several types of cereal along with tea, coffee and juices. They also have bottled water to fill up your water bottle each day, the local water is drinkable but has a bit of an aftertaste. The terrace is open all day (breakfast is from 8 am - 11 am) and we would take advantage of it at the end of the day to have a cocktail (buy your favorite at a duty free shop on the way over as local prices are high) and plan the next day's activities while enjoying the amazing view of the Bosporus. Rooms are not huge, but you aren't in Istanbul to sit in your room are you?! Cable TV with a couple of English channels if you need to keep up with what's going on in the world and newly remodeled bathrooms with plenty of hot water. Can't say enough about the hospitality of the staff, they were wonderful.

Room Tip: You are only a couple of blocks from the Blue Mosque and you will hear the call to prayer each morni...

This small hotel had attentive staff who spoke English well. The location is ideal for first time visitors who would like to see the main sites of interest in Sultanahmet.

Pros: Very close to Aya Sofia and the Blue Mosque, less than 5 min walk. Surprisingly quiet given the location. Prices comparable to other small pensions nearby. Bathroom is not a tiny cramped space. Breakfast had many options to choose from. The view from the enclosed breakfast room and roof terrace is great, with the Bosphorus within view. Close to a street filled with restaurants, although the food there were average in my experience.

Cons: The room is tiny, with little space to move around in.

The biggest asset of this guesthouse is the very nice terrace for breakfast, and plenty of things to eat, from nuts to cake, to cereals, fruits, yoghurt, teas, etc. It's also well located, a few minutes walk to the Blue mosque and Aya Sophia. The room we had was very small, but with a cool four-poster bed, a bit of a view, and a well designed bathroom, with a real shower (and not only a pipe coming from the wall, like in some other guesthouses). The wifi works well and the staff is very friendly and ready to help. They provided free transfer from the airport (Atatürk) when we asked, as we were staying three nights.

This cozy little hotel is in an excellent location, close to major monuments and public transportation and to a wonderful shopping/eating street. It has a lovely roof-top restaurant with a good breakfast. Rooms are perfectly fine. We spent three nights here in September and thought it measured up to more expensive places we had stayed in on previous trips to Istanbul. I doubt you can do better for the money.

We stayed at the Alp on two occasions and enjoyed both stays immensely. While the rooms were on the small side, they were nonetheless comfortable and sparkling clean, likewise the bathrooms. The guys on the desk were always friendly and helpful and twice looked after our luggage, even though there was no specific baggage room provided. The terrace overlooking the Sea of Marmara provided wonderful panoramic views and having a lovely buffet breakfast there was a terrific start to any day. Tea and coffee were available there at all times (though there were only paper cups) and a real bonus for us was the provision of hot and cold drinking water. Position perfect in a quiet street only a few minutes' walk from Sultanahmet Square.

Room Tip: Rooms on the fourth floor are a little quieter.

The Sultanahmet area is crammed full of similar hotels, and I would put the Alp Guesthouse on par with any other in the area. It is convenient to all of the Sultanahmet sites, as well as to taxis and public transportation. The main street has lots of restaurants to choose from, most serving a similar menu. There is also a small market and laundry close by. Rooms are small (typical for the houses in this area), but offer everything you need for your stay, including a desk and closet. I found the bed to be very hard, with fairly flat pillows, and only a rough top sheet to cover myself. Needless to say, I did not get the best quality sleep. The top floor terrace is really very nice and the breakfast buffet is almost overwhelming with options. They offer free filtered water to refill your own water bottle. The wifi downstairs is horribly intermittent, but very good on the upstairs terrace. Prices are on par with similar hotels.

Pros: location; free bottled water refill; great breakfast buffet

Cons: hard bed; only rough, flat sheet; flat pillows

Room Tip: Avoid the first floor to limit noise from people entering the building or talking in the entrance.
