“A Gem of a Mosque”

I probably enjoyed seeing this mosque as much as any. It was beautiful inside and you were able to walk around. Near the Spice Market so worth stopping while you're there.

“Definitely worth a visit”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 13, 2013

Having been to Istanbul several times, I have missed this mosque before, to focus on the other, more famous ones.

However, this is well worth a visit. Beautifully decorated and very active, as a working mosque.

“What's new?”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 12, 2013

A rather pretty mosque at the foot of the Galata Bridge, this was started more than 400 years ago but took more than half a century to complete ---- slow work for Turks. Originally, it was surrounded by a complex including schools, a hospital, library. public baths and a market. The last-named remains as the Egyptian Bazaar or Spice Market. The main gate is imposing, and gives entry to a large courtyard with a lovely Ablution Fountain. The main sanctuary includes two minarets, and as many as 66 domes and half-domes. The decoration achieves a high artistic standard, with blue, green and white tiles forming attractive patterns and complemented by some handsome calligraphic plaques. A Royal Loge is partially screened by a golden partition. The niche indicating the direction of Mecca and the pulpit for the Imam are also beautifully decorated. Worth taking your shoes off to see this attractive interior.

“Superbly beautiful, quiet and friendly.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 11, 2013

From the busy streets you enter the oasis of colour and harmony that is the mosque. You take your shoes off and walk on a soft carpet as you gaze up at the wonderful tiled patterns on all the walls and domes. Prayers were happening at the far end with a small group listening to the imam. The whole atmosphere was tranquil and contemplative.
