Poem Hotel Istanbul

We booked this hotel as part of a package deal with British Airways - return flights plus two nights' accommodation for less than the cost of the flights alone. The reservation worked seamlessly and we were greeted by name on arrival.

With only small overnight bags we used the metro and tram to and from the airport. The hotel is about ten minutes walk from the Sultanahmet tram stop (past the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sofia) and took a little while to find.

After some of the reviews, we were pleasantly surprised to be allocated a decent sized room on the top floor (i.e. below the terrace). The stairs are steep and there are no lifts, but we had a marvellous view of the Bosphorus (even if the foreground leaves a little to be desired). While the hotel may look a little time-worn, it is very clean

Breakfast was better than has been suggested here, and a pleasant setting on the patio beneath the fig trees.

The hotel could hardly be any more convenient to the main historical sights (worth bearing in mind as being there when they open can give a few minutes of relative peace before the tour parties arrive), while Eminonou (for Bosphorus ferries and Spice Market) is still within walking distance.

With recent disturbances in and around Taksim Square, it is worth adding that we felt very safe and encountered no problems of that nature within the vicinity of the hotel or travelling to/from the airport.

Room Tip: Be prepared to walk up a few flights of stairs for the best views.

Yhe Poem Hotel was an ideal site to introduce us to Istanbul. Because it was centrally located in the old city, we were able to walk almost anywhere we wanted to go. Though the room was small, it was very clean. The staff was helpful when we needed transportation or wanted to book a tour. The breakfast had a lot of variety and what must have been freshly baked offerings.

Arrived at Hotel Poem at 2:30 a.m., after traveling for 22 hours....my daughter and I were both exhausted. I had requested a room with 2 beds, with sea view, and had exchanged four emails with the hotel confirming this, arrival time, and payment. We were told that no rooms with two beds were available and a "hotel next door" had rooms. We trudged down the block, down a flight of stairs to an unattractive small building, which was locked. A man emerged to break the glass on the door to get us in, and our room was off the lobby on the first floor. Out the window was an alley with garbage. We were so exhausted that we agreed to stay (the room itself was fine). He promised that we would get our room at the Poem the next day. We spent the morning sightseeing and then returned to the hotel. The man at the desk spoke no English and had no information about us. He called the same person we had seen the previous day, who said that he was sorry but that no rooms were available again. Although he insisted that he had a better room down in the pit in the second hotel, I decided to find something else, which turned out to be above ground, larger, had a great view, good service, and was not much more expensive. What I resented most was the lack of honesty about the reservation and promises for the room we wanted. One other hotel on our trip said that they didn't have a room with too beds, although the online reservation confirmed our request, but at least they moved another bed in, and we stayed.

We stayed in this hotel during our visit to Istanbul on April 2013. We booked this hotel after all the high review we saw on TA. The hotel is located in the center of Sultanahmet which was the only good thing for us. The taxi had a hard time to locate the hotel and even couldn’t find the address on the GPS, he dropped us 10 min away and we had to walk through the streets and ask for the exact location.
The entrance is of the Poem hotel was very disappointing for us, a very old double doors located on a quiet corner that requires a major renovation. Their lobby is very small with front desk. Our room was on the 2nd floor with no elevator service!

Room:
The room was very small and we didn’t expect it to be that small. It was very clean, the mattress was comfy but their pillow was a disaster to sleep on. The bed size was smaller than double which we didn’t like. The washroom requires maintenance and renovation, mold signs on the wall!

Location:
Was the best, very close to all the attraction and within a walking distance from all the attractions.

Breakfast:
Breakfast was a disappointment. The same everyday with no egg station or bacon and limited options. We had to get early for breakfast since some items won’t be served when it’s over!!!

The staff was very pleasant and helpful, they were doing their best to help us whenever we ask them. Their internet access was a disaster in the room, it was always slow and disconnecting.

The hotel is rated 3.5 starts, in my opinion and based on my experience I should be 2 starts.

Room Tip: Ask for a sea view if available!!!

Nice little hotel, off the Aksiyir Caddesi road in Sultanahmet. Rooms are small but well maintained, reflects that owner was former Sheraton employee. Actually a traineee while one of our friends were manager of Sheraton Istanbul. Very friendly and helpful staff. excellent breakfast which can be taken at terrasse with view over the strait of Bosporus. You actually sit below orange trees in the shade while enjoying the breakfast and the view. Wonderfull quiet setting, and still only 2 minutes walk from all the restaurants you can imagine and 5 minutes walk to both Blue Moske, and Haga Sofia. Hotel also have a wonderful roof terrase with panoramic view to both strait of Bosporus and Blue Moske and Haga Sofia. We wil chose this hotel next time we come to Istanbul.

Room Tip: Aks for rooms turning south or east.

This place was a gem- a real surprise. I wanted comfort, but without the high room rate, so I could save my cash for the bazars! The room is small-but you only sleep in it, right? The mattress/bedding and pillows were very comfortable, very clean bathroom (also small) and great shower. There was a/c but I slept with the window open and had fresh air (yes remember that?) and enjoyed the calls to prayer (you are in Istanbul, so totally expected). A lovely turkish breakfast on the terrace and the views from the rooftop are extraordinary (lots of stairs- but worth it). Walking distance to all major attractions in this Sultanahmet area and tram stop to reach everywhere else. A very good selections of restaurants and cafes in walking distance. Staff very helpful and friendly.

Room Tip: If you cannot do stairs, then mention this when booking. I view (or even partial) of the sea is also...
