“Rather out the way but quaint hotel”

I could not understand why my parntner picked this hotel - it was totally out the way of the main drag and I got the feeling more than once that it wasa bit of an effort to see the sights of Istanbul when residing here. There is of course a beautiful church next door which is more than worth a visit. Thre are some beautiful early Christian mosaics to be seen there.
Anyway back to the hotel! The breakfast wasa excellent , loads of choice and the food was fresh and plenty of it. However when it came near the end of service even getting hot water for a cupof tea became a problem. For me this was a blot on an otherwise good quality restaurant.
Our room was rather charming and featured a single bed and double bed. It had a little fridge too. My only complaint was the bathroom - small and a bit grubby - which is an unfortunate feature of many Turkish bathrooms I have visited. I do wish they would learn to use bleach!!!
Most of the major attractions were a long walk or a taxi ride away. You could walk along the main street which had many, many bridal shops (maybe he was trying to hint at something? Lol) and a number of Turkish cafes and restaurants selling low cost snacks and cakes and a couple of mosques to visit.
There was also a pay phone right outside the hotel which made phone calls easy rather than using your mobile
The hotel wasn't nearly as handy as staying in Sultanahmet where we had stayed several times previously, but it was good value for money

We booked this hotel for the last night of a 2 week turkey trip and it turned out to be our biggest mistake. When we reached there - we were met with surly staff - the ONLY service person with attitude I encountered in 2 weeks in Turkey. Then we were told we were not in the main building but the annex - which we found out was a old and crumbling building. The room was a disaster -
-The wallpaper was peeling off, the windows and door handles were almost broken and required super human force to open!
-We had asked for a double bed - and we were put in a room with three beds and told this is the only one available.
-The promised 'wi-fi' didn't work - when complained - there was no action.
- There was no hot water - and when we asked the reception - you're the only room with the problem! So deal with it!!
- the TV in the room was from 1980s including TV top antena with the same old reception quality - suddenly made me think of bad TVdays during storms when I was a child!!
- the next day breakfast again was below average ....
We left as soon as we could - prefer to spend time at the airport rather than this hotel!

Net, if you want to have a good experience in Istanbul, avoid this hotel. There are many better places where you can get a taste of the famed Turkish hospitality and amazing Turkish cusine.

Room Tip: We were put in an hotel annex. If you do end up staying at the hotel - try to avoid the annex and tr...

The restaurant staff were very rude, they chased the guests out of the restaurant after breakfast: they served breakfast until 10am and at 10:25 they chased us and another couple of people out of the restaurant before we finished our meals and drinks.
This is totally shocking, i never heard of such behavior anywhere else.
I told them to wait 5 minutes (since they are waiters, anyway), until we finish our meals, but they came one after another to tell us to stand up. Then I called the manager and told him i will put a bad review on booking.com and tripadvisor... they didnt care.

Maybe they were expecting us to pay them some tips... but the breakfast was included in room charge.

The receptionists were very nice though....

And surprisingly, it has no aircon, and it is difficult to sleep during summer, is very hot.

The room size was reasonable and the beds were good, but it went downhill from there. The bathroom was a disaster -- dirty and dysfunctional. The sheets were too small for the beds. I made the mistake of looking under the bed for something I had dropped -- it obviously had not been cleaned for months. Location depends on your tastes -- we are experienced travellers and I enjoyed not being in the touristy areas, and it is right beside the absolutely spectacular Church of the Chora, but it is not an upscale neighborhood and others might be less comfortable being there. The hotel has potential but needs to have serious money spent on a complete refurbishing. By contrast, the restaurant in the hotel is very good, serving authentic Ottoman cuisine in a lovely setting.

We stayed 6 nights at this hotel with a group of friends and were quite disappointed in the standard of accommodation and the service provided. The bathroom was old and dirty and was never cleaned until we complained. Following our complaint it was a bit cleaner but there was still dust and other people's hairs in the corners. There are no plugs in the sinks, so take your own! The towels were changed regularly but often we would have to ask for more as the maid had not left enough.

The room was quite spacious and the mattresses (we had single beds) were comfortable but the bottom sheets were too small and would not tuck in under the mattress so the sheet creased up under you every night. The maid's idea of making the bed was to straighten the duvet on top but to leave the creased bottom sheet as it was so I ended up making the bed myself every night. The room was also dusty and only cleaned after we complained.

The breakfasts were adequate but there were never enough cups for tea and coffee. Apparently this was our fault as we used cups for tea when we should have used glasses in the Turkish way!

As a large party we had set meals and there were issues with these as they were very repetitive. The cooking was good on the whole and the restaurant has a good reputation in Istanbul if one is able to eat a la carte though we were not able to test this out for ourselves.

The hotel is in a nice quiet location and has the potential to be a pleasant small hotel but it needs to put much more effort and money into upgrading its facilities, training its staff and being more consumer orientated.

The staff was very amable and giving me informations about the city, the breakfast was sensational (during the summer the breakfast is served in a garden, outiside and even if there was some cats there, they were very friendly) and the quality-price raport was very convenient.
I can tell you a negative thing about the fact that the hotel is quite far from the city main attractions (you must pay some extra-money for the public transport or the taxi) and the bathroom needs a little more repairs.

My wife and I had stayed at the Kariye Hotel five years ago, and liked it enough to return for a three-day stay this June. The hotel is unique for three reasons. First, it is located right next to the Chora (Kariye) museum, the small version of the Aya Sophia, with superb, recently restored 12th century Greek Orthodox mosaics and frescoes. Second, the hotel is home to the Asitane restaurant, a wonderful Ottoman-style restaurant, that has a series of tables in the large, tree-shaded patio of the hotel. Eating at a patio table, you feel like you are at a fine country inn. Third, the Kariye Hotel has been converted from a large wooden Ottoman home, and retains a certain family feeling in the scale of the building and the friendliness and helpfulness of the staff.
But there are still more attractions to staying at the Kariye. Efforts have been made to close the area to vehicle traffic, especially in the large tree-shaded square in front of the Chora, that is filled with cafe tables, and is such an appealing place to sit and sip tea, while watching the comings and goings of the neighborhood population and the steady stream of visitors to the museum, that you can happily spend hours there.
It seems very far from the rush and noise of central Istanbul at the Kariye, and indeed, it is. To get to the heart of tourist Istanbul, in the Sultanahmet district, takes about twenty minutes by taxi. The hotel desk is very helpful in calling a taxi for you, and explaining to the driver where you want to go.
We booked a suite this time. It was a corner unit, with windows that overlooked a row of shops in traditional two and three-story wooden houses across the street, and the ancient domes and walls of the Chora church next to the hotel, and separated from it by trees and the garden surrounding Chora.
The furniture of the room was French regency style; painted white and gold, with upholstered seats and backrests. Because it was a corner unit, we had a good breeze through the sitting room and bedroom; very welcome, since there is no air-conditioning.
The bathroom needed to be remodeled. It was barely adequate.
A somewhat erratic breakfast service is included in the room rate. Having breakfast on the patio is very pleasant, but was only possible one of the three days we were there.
There is no elevator. Hotel staff were very accommodating; taking our bags to and from our room.
Room rates are reasonably modest.
The community around the hotel is an older working class one, of low rise wooden houses and concrete apartment buildings, small shops and cafes. The ancient Byzantine wall that once encircled Constantinople (Istanbul) is a short walk away. It is undergoing considerable restoration.
This is a quirky sort of location and the hotel matches it. It is a very appealing place to stay, if you do not mind being twenty minutes by taxi from the Sultanahmet district of Istanbul.
