“Great location, great staff, best breakfast ever, small rooms”
Reviewed October 14, 2012

This was the first of 8 hotels we stayed at in Turkey, and no other place had as fine a breakfast as Valide Sultan Konagi offered in its impressive rooftop restaurant. Staff were courteous and helpful in every way.
The rooms are indeed very small, but they are clean and furnished nicely.
While the hotel is at a very busy spot during daytime hours -- yes, loads and loads of tour buses -- the nights were pleasantly and surprisingly quiet. It's location also makes it fairly easy to find on foot in an otherwise labyrinth-like city.

Room Tip: If you will be staying several days ask about a larger room.

We found this hotel thru Rick Steeves' "Istanbul" guide. We were not disappointed with his recommendations. Staff very friendly and helpful, some a little pushy to push you toward guides or restaurants. The room was fine, looked on to Hagia Sophia. Breakfast on the 4th floor overlooking the Bosphorus was nice and well done. We were able to walk to many important sites and had good experiences using the tram or buses.

very good small hotel 100 steps from Topkapi and maybe 200 from Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque... rooms and breakfat OK, view from the higher floors (including restaurant) really amazing
the reception staff is very friendly but will try to sell you every possible extra-service, if possible use only official guides

Room Tip: higher floors have a great view

-The photos are deceiving...the rooms are TINY and incredibly outdated!!!
IF YOU ARE TRAVELLING WITH 3 people - the 3 person room is a JOKE. They are small for even 2 people.

-The location while it's "close" to things...is VERY VERY busy. It's right next to where the tour busses drop off millions of people to see the Topkapi palace, and there's a taxi station right there. VERY noisy.

-WATCH OUT for expensive "suggestions". They GET COMMISSION on everything they suggest to you. They mark the prices up and keep the difference. We did a cruise they suggested and sat next to someone that paid $40 less PER PERSON.

-LAUNDRY - do not do it there. They fail to tell you there's a minimum and drastically overcharge you.

-Breakfast - is great and the view is good. The older guy running the bar is very very sweet.

-The day clerk (benjamin I think) is very very nice and accomidating. The night clerk will over charge and try to sell you on EVERYthing.

Room Tip: If you're travelling with 3 people do NOT stay here.

Right around the corner from the Four Seasons Hotel and spitting distance from Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque, this is a very good small hotel. The staff are friendly and helpful, my room was clean (and I liked the comforter). Breakfast was plentiful and good with a nice view of the Bosporus. The bathroom was a little small and you can hear when the room above flushes, and the safe in the room conked out with stuff inside so the manager had to unlock it, but overall, quite good for the price. A spacious lobby area and lots of tea, and the wi-fi was easy and worked consistently. I would recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: I booked a room for 2 and it's pretty small, with a full-sized bed. For two people, especially i...

In short, we were totally pleased with the room, the location, the breakfast, the staff, and will recommend Hotel Valide Sultan Konagi to any of our friends, relatives, or random strangers needing a reasonably priced, unique and comfortable place to stay while in Istanbul. As an added bonus, one of the main guys there, Bunyamin, is maybe the world’s best hotelier.

In long, we arrived in Istanbul at 9 am after taking an overnight bus from a small seaside town in Bulgaria named Burgas. This bus ride was the final leg of a journey that started two weeks previously in Florence, Italy. When we arrived in Istanbul, all we wanted to do was take showers, eat a little something, and rest. However, we stopped in three hotels located in Sultanahmet, the main historic district in Istanbul, and they were all full. After literally having a short cry (my companion needed to let out some emotion after we were turned away the third time), we started walking towards Hagia Sophia and let its massive beauty ease our spirits. As we continued to explore the area, we found Topkapi Palace and the relatively steep hill and street along its southwestern side. At the end of this short street, is a hotel you can't miss due to its brilliant burnt orange wood exterior and welcoming front door. With hopes in our hearts that this was where we were going to rest out heads, we walked in and were greeted by the extremely helpful, polite, and English speaking, Bunyamin (like Benjamin).

Bunyamin immediately sensed our road weariness but, since it was still early and the hotel was full the night before, he needed at least an hour to check out a previous guest and prepare a room for us. Luckily, breakfast was being served up on the roof and he insisted that we go up stairs and enjoy a meal and the view of the Bosphorus and Asia. We accepted.

The rooftop restaurant was great, the staff was perfect, and the view hit the spot. We were happy. When our room was ready, Bunyamin came and found us, took us to the room, made sure it was to our liking, and left us to enjoy the quiet breeze of air-conditioning, a shower full of endless hot water, and beds more than comfortable enough for a solid midday nap.

We spent three nights at Hotel Valide and enjoyed every one of them. Our last night there we needed to be up and at the airport at 5:30 am and Bunyamin made sure there were breakfast and an airport shuttle waiting to greet us when we awoke. He even helped us with our pronunciation of “teşekkür ederim” (pronounced “tea sugar dream”), which is what we had to say repeatedly for all the unexpected but greatly welcomed help we received. For those who don’t speak Turkish, “tea sugar dream” means “thank you.”

As for the city of Istanbul, if you haven’t been or are questioning why anyone would go, you’re missing out on a major life experience. The city has an incredibly deep and vibrant culture full of great cuisine, sights, shopping and perhaps the most colorful people on either side of the Bosphorus. If you’re looking for a reasonably priced, unique and comfortable place to stay while in Istanbul, stay at Hotel Valide Sultan Konagi. It’s practically perfect.
