The entire Taksim area, the square, Gezi Park, Isktiklal Street, and the immediate surrounding area is my favorite part of Istanbul. Shop, eat, drink, people watch until bedtime. I can't get tired of this place. Get in touch with today's Istanbul and its wonderful people. Unfortunately, there are demonstrations. Just leave when you sense something is about to happen, and go back in a couple of hours when things have called down. Follow directions of the many policeman. You will be fine. If you put yourself in the middle of unrest, or if you refuse to walk where instructed, you may not have such a pleasant experience. Just be smart about it. There are an abundance of beggars - many children who are bullied by older children into working. Many are from Syria. Just ignore them, or toss a coin their way, and keep walking. Don't let that stop you for enjoying the atmosphere.
