When visiting Istanbul one tends to rush to SultanAhmet to see the historical places which are closely located in SultanAhmet. Once one sees the famous palaces, Church & Mosques one likes to get out of history-mode and visit the modern side of Istanbul. This is where Taksim square takes over which is a nice mix of historic& modern Turkey. Just walk down on the Istiklal street and you would see the usual hustle-bustle of any modern city in Europe or north Merica for that matter. Surprisingly Taksim area restaurants, Hammams, transports are cheaper than what you pay for same service in SultanAhmet. From Taksim square you can easily access to any part of Istanbul as all mode of transportation is easily & cheaply available. Walking from one end to the last on Istiklal street is a must if you want to take in sights, sound & sophistication of Istanbul. Its a pleasure to see all big three religions Christianity, Judaism and Islam existing side by side with mutual respect and tolerance. You shall see Ataturk's hallmark everywhere you go in Istanbul and beyond, and this tells you how far Turkey has progressed. If you want to have best of both, historic& modern Istanbul then Taksim square is the place you must visit and stay a few days.
