Nice hotel in a great location near the Blue Mosque and Aya Sophia. Nice part of the old town near many good restaurants. Very friendly helpful staff. Beautiful roof terrace with views of the mosques and sea. Good breakfast. Helpful tourist advice.

Hotel Sari Konak is located in a terrific part of Istanbul, the Sultanahmet area, allowing guests to see many famous sites within walking distance. Turkish memorabilia stores (rugs, pottery, jewelry) and local feeling restaurants abound right around the corner. Truly there is never a dull moment around the hotel: day or night. The staff is delightful and very helpful. They nicely handled are transportation to and from the airport and were willing to organize any tour we wanted. The one aspect of the hotel that didn't suit my fancy for the two of us was the size of our superior room. I asked to upgrade, but there were no other deluxe rooms available and I was told that superior room was sufficient for two, so I kept the reservation without looking any further. We survived, but our clothes and luggage were strewn out all over the desk and chair (the only furniture in the room besides the bed) which we had to face wherever we went in the room. We absolutely survived, as we were on the go most of the day in busy Istanbul. Next time I would just want a larger room for more comfort. Last and definitely not least was the roof top, place to go for breakfast and to relax after a long touring day. You get a nice view of the bay and other hotels' roof top areas while sitting either in the area for dining or in the lounging area.

Room Tip: If size matters think about getting a deluxe room!!

Sari Konak Hotel was about a 30-minute taxi ride from Istanbul’s Attaturk Airport, and is located in the Sultanahmet area of Istanbul. The location is excellent, about a 4-minute walk to two major attractions—the Blue Mosque and Agia Sofia. Another 2 minutes and you are at the Sultanahmet tram station, which, for 2 Turkish lira (about 1.10 USD) takes you to other important attractions, although one can also walk to many of the destinations. The Sari Konak Hotel was clean and pleasant, although the rooms were quite small, yet adequate. There was occasional street noise late into the evening (or early morning) as loud, late-night tourists conversed directly outside our street level window.

The staff at the front desk were very helpful in arranging tickets to the Hadja Pash Cultural Center evening show (well worth the 50 Turkish lira ticket!) and taxi to the airport on our departure (although we missed our flight because, on the Sari Konak staff’s advice, we got there just two hours prior to departure; not enough time, so get there three hours ahead if you’re taking Turkish Airlines, which has a disastrous check-in system at Attaturk Airport!).

Breakfast (nice) was served on the terrace on the upper level. It has a fantastic view of the Blue Mosque looming directly down at you, as well as a nice view of the Bosphorus. The terrace was also open all day long and evening, and was a nice quiet place to read, connect to the internet, or just reflect. Sari Konak was a bit expensive by American standards for the quality of the room, and the rates were quite a bit higher than nicer hotels in other parts of Turkey, but it seems the location can demand the higher rate. All things considered, the Sari Konak Hotel is a very pleasant and convenient place to stay for a visit to Istanbul.

I’d read so many positive reviews about the Sari Konak that I had no hesitation about staying there, encouraged also by a strong personal recommendation from a well-travelled friend who is very particular about accommodation standards. But to be honest, we were disappointed.

There’s certainly a lot going for the Sari Konak – convenient, quiet location in Sultanahmet, easy walking distance to key attractions, shops, and quality restaurants etc. It has a relaxing roof-top terrace with lovely views of the Blue Mosque, and a charming leafy courtyard downstairs, which is delightful. And judging by the images promoted on the website, it also boasts some spacious, tastefully decorated refurbished rooms. Unfortunately Room 301 isn’t one of them.

We booked our 6-night stay directly with the hotel many months in advance. No deluxe rooms were available for the period of our stay but I was reassured that their superior rooms were of a high standard, and our booking would be changed to a deluxe room if one became available. Regrettably, this didn’t happen. The room we were allocated was a huge disappointment – next to the lift, small and tired, with an old desk lamp hanging together with strips of yellowing sticky tape...not what we had hoped for, or expected.

The evening manager was obliging and offered to relocate us to a family suite (the only option available) for a modest additional charge which we were more than happy to pay. This corner suite (502) was comparatively spacious and comfortable – large windows featuring cheerful boxes of red geraniums, and views overlooking cafes and the streetscape. Simply furnished with two small bedrooms (1 double, 1 twin), a lounge room and bathroom, it was pleasant and practical – ideal for our stay.

Breakfasts were served on the roof terrace - an ordinary, lack lustre selection featuring fruit, bread, polony, cheese, yoghurt, hard-boiled eggs... nothing to get the taste buds twitching although the coffee was good. (Orange juice and omelettes are available at an additional cost). The roof terrace is also a pleasant venue for a sunset drink – the evening waiter is cheerful, friendly and happy to be of service.

The reception staff were generally helpful if pressed, but not particularly forthcoming otherwise. There was no sense of welcome on arrival, just a vague, luke-warm greeting – rather, our arrival seemed more of an inconvenience. We weren’t briefed on the hotel’s services or facilities – there was limited info in our room - and we only discovered by accident on our last day that there was a computer room and printer for guests in the basement of the building. It was a stark contrast to the outstanding customer service we had experienced at other hotels during our holiday in Turkey. The Sari Konak could learn much from the warmth and willingness of staff at Ortahisar’s Hezen Cave Hotel, or the impeccable service so much a feature at Istanbul’s Hotel Amira.

Overall, we found the Sari Konak to be a reasonable modest hotel in a good location, offering fairly average service. Would we stay there again? Probably not.

Room Tip: rooms near the lift are noisy as the lift is heavily used to get to the terrace as well as other floors;

We found this gem of a hotel in the old city of Istanbul through Trip Advisor. Excellent location and close to all attractions. The quiet street location was a bonus for sleeping at night. We stayed in room 602, a large room with 2 twin beds with lots of room for luggage storage. The bathroom was very spacious with modern fixtures and ample hot water. The friendly staff and breakfasts on the terrace made this stay one to remember.
