Owner description: Built in 500 A.D., Galata Tower is one of the dominating landmarks of Istanbul. It was used as a watchtower to help defend the city.

After losing your breath while weaving your way through the maze of interesting "sokaks" of Istanbul you will find yourself, breathless, in front of the breathtaking Galata tower, built by the Florentines. You might lose even more breath trying to convince the guardians of the Tower to let you in for free - which they will not do. If you are not ready to pay the price, your last option is to simply imagine the interior (which is surely mind-boggling) as you circle the cylindrical Galata Tower. So evidently built by the skillful artisans of the great and chilly city of Florence*

We made the mistake of going up on a smoggy day. We couldn't see much. It certain wasn't worth the 20TL and their was no discount for kids. The restaurant there is very expensive. The observation deck is very narrow and was crowded. It was difficult to get a good view.

With my first visit to Turkey in 1997 I was based virtually next to the Galata Tower and took many pictures - but never got to go inside. The same happened in 1997 and finally with a visit this month my host insisted that we go in.
It was a rainy day but the view from the top was great. We walked up and down and that was good exercise. The place was rather crowded and one could not leisurely enjoy the outside due to the many people.
The tower is well maintained and of historical interest being built in 528 by the Byzantine Emperor Anastasius Oilosuz. It is 66.9m high and 140m above sea level.
It has a well presented restaurant which not being hungry I did not make use of although later I was told they have a mean coffee worth sampling.
I would probably not have entered due to the price, but as my host paid it was ok.
For those into history and structures - this can be a worthwhile visit. The view is impressive from the top and picturesque.

Though the climb up to the base of the tower was a bit steep and tiring we enjoyed every moment of it. The tickets are a little expensive. The top floor observation balcony gives you 360 degree view of the city. Worth the time and effort

It was worth the hike up for this incredible view of Istanbul. Be sure and stop and the Cherry Bean Coffee Shop either on the way up or down! Delicious Turkish Coffee...
