Owner description: Built in 500 A.D., Galata Tower is one of the dominating landmarks of Istanbul. It was used as a watchtower to help defend the city.

This was probably the poorest value sight visited during our ten day visit to Istanbul. It was relatively expensive compared to the many other places of interest. A lift transports you to the viewing deck which is accessed from a restaurant/Café. The views across the city are good but similar views can be enjoyed from a number of other viewpoints throughout the city. There is little room to manoeuvre around the viewing area so you need to be patient. 360 degree views of the city so don't forget your camera!

We stopped by mid-morning, bought tickets (10TL / ea.) and then decided to come back when the sun light was more conducive to photography. That turned out to be an excellent decision. We were able to walk right past the much longer afternoon line and go straight to the top. The 360° view from the top balcony of the tower was stunning. We were very thankful that there was an elevator that covered the first seven stories, the stairway that led up the rest was very steep.

This is worth the reasonable admission price, and you'll appreciate the view after climbing the stairs.

Its offers good view of city. But entrance fee is little expensive for tourists. From morning 8-20:30 it will be opening. If its too crowded then really difficult to move and view as the path is very small. So try to visit early morning or late evening.

There is cafeteria and a photo studio. This photo studio gives Turkish style cloths to wear for photos. This we felt best in Galata Tower.

It can be a chore to find the Galata Tower amongst the steep and winding streets that snake through the Galata neighbourhood.  However, it's worth the effort as the views from the tower are superb.

Two elevators take you to the seventh floor of the tower (after paying the 13 Lira entrance fee) then you climb up the next two floors by stairs to get to the outdoor observation area. It winds around the tower and there are no screens to block your view. The best views are of Sultanahmet, the Bosphorus and Marmara Sea and the Golden Horn. You truly get a sense of the size of the city and the vast number of mosques that dot the neighbourhoods.

Try to come earlier in the day. If a tour groups arrives before you it's probably best you take a break at one of the nearby cafes to let them clear through.
