Ortakoy means middle village on Turkish language, and I would say sweet, like Turkish lokum.I came there once and sat in the cafe opposite of the Cami .It was the time for prayer and many people, woman and men were going in and out by the two sided stairs. The day was sunny, wind was blowing and I sat and had coffee ,watched tourists , scholars, old and young, walking around, eating hot potatoes and ships coming and going from the shore, pigeons, cats, shops full of jewelry hand made, scarfs and hats , and a lot of small restaurants.Camii is the most beautiful of all the Cami I saw in Istanbul with big windows full of light which comes inside in a special way.
You can inyou in peaceful atmosphere although it is crowded it seems that nobody pays attention on you. Dont miss it and dont stay too short, spend some time there its relaxing .

Water front, pigeons, sea gulls, baked jacket potatoes with unlimited toppings, freshly fried tiny fish, mussel Dolmas , a must try, you'll never forget it. Cafes , and of course Istanbul cats all over , sitting lazy enjoying the blue Bospherous with the locals. I recommend the House Cafe, Sahleb, there, and any Turkish dessert at MADO's , ....you can take a break, shop for good bargains , souvenirs, faux bijoux ( and some real artistic Jewlery ) , all within footsteps from each other. You can stroll along to the marina close by, ..I just love it ...can spend four hours and will be back....many times ...don't miss it.

It's alright if you have a free afternoon, the Sunday market is completely overrated. Stuffs being sold there were not very interesting, the only plus side is the stuffed potato which was alright and filling.

Mr Obama had a picture here with a view of Ortakoy mosque and the Bhosphorus Bridge behind. It is free, you must do it as well, ;).

We walked here fromnthe Kabatas tram stop to see the Sunday market. It was an ok walk and just an ok market (not very big). We did buy jacket potatoes for lunch. But unless you have lots of time, I would do many other things first.
