While I would recommend a Bosphorus cruise as a good way to see Istanbul, I hope this helps you avoid the trap we fell into. We bought a private boat cruise (short) for 20 euros from a tout because the starting point was walking distance from our Sultanahmet hotel rather than the further away piers near Galata bridge from where the other ferries leave. The private cruise left from a small jetty at 4.30pm and returned at 6.15 pm. The boat was overcrowded and so viewing and seating was limited. We doubted there were enough life jackets on board for everyone. Being winter (Jan) the upper outdoor deck was not a comfortable weather option. The crew did their best but it was not worth the premium price. I subsequently found a blog recommending against the more expensive and dubious private tours and instead recommending the official ferries that leave from the piers near Galata Bridge and which are less expensive.

We saw lots of tickets advertised all over the city and were approached all the time by touts offering boat tours for 15 euros , more or less. Instead we went down to the Bogaz Iskelesi pier where we found a two hour trip for 10 lira (less than £3/ 5 euro/ $5). It wasn't the most luxurious boat but it had a warm lower deck with cafe and open top deck. Amazingly, he was there again on new year's eve for the same price. Incredible value!!!! Seek it out!

Bosporus is quite vast -as is Istanbul at the shores of the famous strait. So unless you have a whole month to travel around the city, this is the only way to take a glance at it (both European and Asian side). There is a recording on-board explaining the sights in Turkish and English. However, noisy passengers (and group guides!!) may prevent you from hearing everything. There are two daily cruises: the small one (1,5 hours) and the large one (5,5 hours). At both you can hop-off and onto the next passing ship to visit any place of the city (with a port). You can sit inside (plenty of window-seats) to be warm or outside to take better pictures. Reasonable price for a good tour.

My husband and I took the Bosphorus cruise which took us all around Istanbul. We even got to see the Asian side! Amazingly this city is so huge that this roundtrip took 1.5 hours. I think this might have been the best way to see how the city (at least along the waterfront!) looks like if you dont have a car to take you around. Istanbul is so unique and you can see its diversity along this cruise.

We have gone to princess island by ferry from Kabatas, last stain of tram and catched Sahil hatkri ferry at 11 AM (although on website it was 10-30) and return by 3-00 evening. A great day on Bosphorus and island with tour on horses cart or by bicycle. great day. Also enjoyed great lunch at restaurants there. Ticket is TR 5 for each side. Don't pay Organised trips charging Euro 50 to Euro 85 for half day tour of short distance.
