We took the long trip. Leaves the Eminonu port (pier nearest the bridge) at 10:30am, but if you are going on a weekend and want the best seats get there an hour before hand. Buy the ticket (TL$25 return) just where you get the boat and not from the touts, you will not be on the boat you think you are going on if you do. You want to be on the left hand side of the boat for the best views, and you will find that the seats at the top look the most inviting, but so many people go to the top it gets very crowded and you will find yourself with people standing in front of you. Best seats for me are the ones that run down the side of the boat on the lower or first deck. No one stands in front of you, and you get a bit of shelter from the wind. Trip out takes 90 minutes, stopping at several other stops to pick up more passengers. The boat leaves Kavagi at 3pm sharp, so you have 3 hours. Walk up to the castle for some excellent views, stop at the restaurant near the top for a drink (and great view), but I hear the food is better at one of the many restaurants in town. The access into the castle is a bit hap hazzard. It was open (free entry) when we got up (although only part of it was accessable), but it closed about 5 minutes later with the guard trying to shoo people out. This would have been at about 1pm. Can't remember the name of the place we ate at, but it was good and cheep, and from what I hear fropm other travellers most people find this at any of the restaurants. Trip back takes 1 hour, so you are back at a little after 4pm. Great day out.
