There is a real sense of history in this traditional hotel. Our room was spacious, comfortable and clean. The vast majority of the staff were helpful, polite and friendly. They were let down by 2 members of the spa team who assumed that we could not understand their unprofessional comments following our tour of their facility and by a member of staff called Erman who could not have been less helpful if his life depended on it. Overall though, a lovely hotel and a really enjoyable stay.

I'm writing this sitting in the Pierre Loti suite, I've obviously paid a lot of money for the room as I wanted this trip to be special for my mom and she loves Agatha Christie. But, where do I start? The people at reception are indifferent at best. The bell boys are sweet and helpful. The hotel, of course is beautiful but you can easily see it on a visit instead of staying here. This is my third time in Istanbul and trust me there are much better hotels for this kind of money.
1. The air conditioning seems to be stuck at 28°Celsius, a late night visit from the technician didn't fix it either. I had to sleep with the windows open and the traffic noise ensured I didn't get any shut eye.
2. The room and the curtains are really really dusty, we've been sneezing since we checked in last night.
3. There were no bath robes, nor any additional bathroom accessories like toothbrushes etc as you would expect in any regular 5 star hotel . I had to call reception and even then they just sent one.
4. The coffee and tea area is a disaster, where do I even start. There are duplicate coffee pods (terrible taste) in a nespresso box, the coffee machine starts off with thick drips and then water. Lipton tea bags, coffee mate creamer and Nescafe sachets (like a motel) and the hot water kettle has mineral deposits inside and is rusted from outside. I'm posting pictures of these.
5. The house keeping keeps walking in without even knocking despite the do not disturb sign. She also kept insisting on servicing the room while we were still in it!

I very rarely write negative reviews as nobody and nothing is perfect and certainly not while actually staying in the hotel, but this has fallen wayyyy below my expectations. I've stayed in countless 5 star hotels, regular rooms and suites across the globe, none as bad as this. I've been here only 16 hours, let's see what else comes up. Wonder if the Jumeirah group actually inspects this place as their other hotels are fantastic.

We spent three nights here and were very pleased with our stay. The hotel is old but well maintained with a lot of charm. It’s located close to several very good restaurants including Mikla, Meze by Lemon Tree and Aheste.

Our room was large, clean and very nice. Housekeeping and the front desk personnel were very good.

The afternoon tea was is a good deal @ $20 or so. The assortment of pastries and small sandwiches was outstanding as was the service. Breakfast cost about the same as the tea but was a little overpriced.

They have a nice bar with outside seating. Service at the bar wasn’t very good however.

We visited the Ataturk Museum in Room 101. It’s open a few hours a day and is worth a visit.

The hotel has the first elevator in Istanbul but we weren’t able to ride it. They only allow you to use it upon arrival. Someone else was using it when we checked in so we didn’t get to ride in it. That was disappointing - IMO we should have been offered a rain check.

Overall, though, we liked the place a lot and highly recommend it.

Once again, thank you very much for your kind words. We certainly look forward to welcoming you back at Pera Palace Hotel, hopefully in the very near future and to give you the historical elevator experience that you missed on your last visit.

Selecting this hotel at the end of our two-week tour of Greece and our first trip to Istanbul was the smartest decision we made. This historical, luxury hotel built in 1892 attracted notable guests like Agatha Christie (who penned Murder on the Orient Express in her suite) and Ernest Hemingway who likely found the hotel bar to his standards. The moment our cab pulled up to the hotel, we knew we were going to be the beneficiaries of top-notch service by individuals who are fully trained in the art of formal hospitality. The doorman and bellhop snapped to attention and graciously welcomed our family through the revolving doors into the stunning entryway. The service wasn't solicitous in any way, but came naturally by every staff member we encountered from the front desk attendants to the young man who showed us to our rooms. We rode up on the historical elevator with beautiful cast-iron detailing and were proudly shown to our rooms with Golden Horn views. My daughters were delighted with their modernized bathroom with enclosed claw-foot bathtub, and both of our rooms had balconies overlooking the busy thoroughfare below, the soccer stadium and of course the older section of Istanbul with the various bridges and mosques. The breakfast room was beautiful and we had our choice of eggs made to order, hot offerings like potatoes, sausages, yogurts, fruits, and generous hunks of honey in the comb. The service was again top-notch; I heard the waitstaff speak four different languages while we were there, without a whiff of impatience. My grandfather had formal waitstaff training in Europe at the turn-of-the century, and the impeccable service we enjoyed was a throwback to that era.
The location is in the Beyoglu district, a hip neighborhood filled with bars and restaurants with a pedestrian street Ikstiklal Caddesi lined with grand embassy buildings from the late 19th-century.

Room tip: Golden Horn Views with balcony if possible.

High Tea at The Pera Palace is one of the high points of our recent trip to Istanbul. With a fine selection of finger sandwiches, sweets and teas we were able to lounge for a pleasant afternoon taking in the lovely setting furnishings and music provided. The attendants were accommodating and we never felt rushed. We highly recommend visiting during your stay.
