Old world athmosphere in this hotel. Decor is magic, location is great, staff are friendly, bar is a must. Only down side is the lack of effeciency with staff, although friendly & helpful, service can be slow and a bit gauche.

I never miss a chance to take tea in this fantastic hotel when visiting Istanbul. It is pricey, about £20, but you sit in the ornate court which would have been familiar to the likes of Agatha Christie and Hemmingway, and drink leaf tea served in a silver plated teapot - is the cutlery the same as used by Ms Christie? No idea but the labels in the basement display suggest that the pre war order for over 2,000 pieces still has pieces that are unused. There are wonderful sandwiches , no crusts, eaten with a knife and fork and an array of tiny, beautiful cakes. The linen napkin is a dainty square. As the pianist plays you can simply float off in to a reverie about people taking tea for the last 100 years! Absolutely love it!

Wonderful old world hotel. Love the history of the original Orient Express travelers using this as their hotel when they arrived in Istanbul. Although we weren't met with a welcoming drink or refreshing towels as we are used to with the other Jumeirah venues the hotel was still nice. Our room on the 4th floor was large and well appointed with a lovely view of the Golden Horn. The only downside was the service each morning of our three day stay in the Agatha room for breakfast. The servers were plentiful and seemed to be trainees. After being seated and given a cup of coffee they seems to disappear. A second cup of coffee was near to impossible. I found it easier to just go to the service station and get my own coffee. I wanted fresh eggs one morning but could not get their attention to place an order. The buffet was OK. The same service and staff in the Orient Bar. We sat for 10 minutes, no one else was in the room and two servers were at the bar chatting. I went to the bar, ordered two drinks and brought them back to the table. The servers seems annoyed that I interrupted their conversation. For breakfast and the at the bar, we were either alone or with just one or two other couples so it couldn't be that they were overworked. Such a wonderful hotel and well appointed but with indifferent staff and lousy service doesn't instill repeat patronage. A shame because we found the hotel wonderful and a definite 5 stars if it weren't for the three servers that enjoyed their own conversations over serving the guests.

We loved our stay at this historic property! The service was what one would expect from a luxury property- exceptional. The staff was incredibly friendly. Before we arrived, the concierge was kind enough to coordinate dinner reservations (done in advance via Email as I'm a planner). We even arrived to a bottle of wine and a delicious dessert as a honeymoon treat (compliments of the hotel). The surrounding neighborhood has great pubs, restaurants, and shops and there is a metro stop very close by. The hotel is overflowing with history. Definitely have a drink in the bar. The prices are high, but it's worth the experience of drinking at the bar where Hemmingway and Jackie O. once imbibed. For us, this was an amazing, once-in-a-lifetime experience.

We were checked into the Pera Palace Hotel by our travel agent for an overnight stay in Istanbul before joining a cruise. We travelled along narrow and steep streets and were amazed to arrive at this magnificient hotel. The receptoon staff were friendly and welcoming and received us with hot towels and a refreshing lemonade drink. We were checked in rapidly and before we knew it we were whisked up into our sumptuous bedroom. The en-suite bathroom was old fashioned and luxurious. The room had a balcony with table and chairs with a view into the Old City and views of the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia Museum. Complimentary bowls of the most delicious chocolates arrived a few moments later. Lovely restaurants and tea rooms - a bit on the pricey side but well worth it. Next morning we were taken around the Attaturk Museum in Room 101 by a well informed member of the hotel staff (Akin) who took us up in an old wooden lift. Room 101 was where the founder of modern Turkey Kemal Attaturk stayed for many years. A superb stay and a "must do" in Istanbul

Room Tip: All rooms are superb but those on the top floor have the best views

On our first visit to Istanbul, we could not have been happier with our hotel choice. Pera Palace is a beautifully restored, elegant property, perfectly located in the new part of the city but reasonably close by foot or tram to the major sights in the old city. Our room, on the 4th Floor, had a magnificent view of the Golden Horn and beyond. The street below us was busy, but the sound proofing in the room was excellent. The public areas in the hotel are gorgeous. Our room was very comfortable and very nicely furnished; complimentary bottled water was provided each day. The spa facilities are great -- fitness center has treadmills, ellypticals and bikes and enough weight machines and free weights for an excellent workout. The sauna, steam room and indoor swimming pool and jacuzzi are great after a day of sightseeing. We enjoyed a couples traditional Turkish bath; anywhere else in the city the Turkish baths are strictly segregated by gender. Service is personal and responsive. The restaurant was pricey and so we ate elsewhere; the neighborhood is great for walking -- you can spend hours in the maze of nearby narrow streets and alleys -- and there are many restaurants, bars and stores of all kinds. While the hotel was on the expensive side, it was no where near as expensive as the Four Seasons or the Kempinsky, and much better located. We were torn about whether to stay in the old city near the major sights, but in retrospect, this was a much better choice, because of the plethora of restaurants in the neighborhood. We got a good deal by paying the nonrefundable rate. I would go so far as to say the Pera is one of the better urban hotels I have stayed in anywhere.

Room Tip: The Golden Horn view is worth paying extra for. One side of the hotel faces an active construction...
