“Old Town Istanbul Hotel”
Reviewed October 22, 2012

I found this hotel online and am so happy we stayed there. The huge roof top restaurant, choice of inside or out has beautiful views; one side is the sea and the other the Blue Mosque. The food is excellent! Everyone is so friendly and communication is not a problem. I paid ahead for them to pick us up from the airport and am so glad I did. The hotel is across the street from the water front, where you can walk or jog and is only a short stroll to Old Town's quaint cafes, restaurants, other hotels. The Grand Bazaar and Blue Mosque is not much further past that where you can catch the "Big Tour Buses" to take you all around the city getting on and off wherever you want, all day long. We loved this area of Istanbul!

Room Tip: We had a "Deluxe Room" which gave us quite a bit of space. It had a "semi" view...

We stayed at this hotel in September as part of a small tour group. It is located in Sultanamet within easy walking to all the major sites. The room included a safe, vanity mirror, tissues, robes, and slippers. We had a limted view of the "garden" in the back. Breakfast on the terrace overlooking the water was the best we had in all of Turkey. We chose mezes for our dinner and had a terrific view of the Blue Mosque up the hill from the hotel.

Room Tip: We had room 242 which had no particular view but was not noisy.

The Armada is in the perfect location. Our room looked out towards the Bosporus and we could watch all of the ships lining up to go through. From the terrace restaurant you could have a perfect water view or the more romantic view of the Blue Mosque which looks great in the early evening. Unfortunately the room was tiny with barely enough room to move - so if you plan to spend a lot of time in your room you may wish to look elsewhere. The shower was over the bath - so if you have some mobility issues this is not the place for you either. You need to remember that this is an old building in an older area and only so much can be done to modernise it without losing its character - and it certainly has character. The elevators are cupboard sized - our room was marginally bigger yet it was nice. It was adequate for an overnight or 2 but I don't think I'd like it for longer.
If you are looking for a place to sleep close to the romance Istanbul has to offer - this is your place. Service was great if you could catch someone's attention. The food in the restaurant was quite nice without being great. breakfast was a real experience - not to be missed. There was little that was recognisable but it was fun trying different things.
If you're staying in Istanbul you really want to be in or near the old part of the city and that's exactly where this is -location, location, location. Walk to the Blue Mosque and Santa Sofia in minutes.

This large hotel is hidden just off the waterfront and is superbly located for visiting the Blue Mosque and the museum of Santa Sofia. the roof terrace has amazing views and a perfect place for lunch or dinner. Rooms a little small but fine. Ask for an upper floor and water view or you face the back. Upper floor can glimpse the Blue mosque.

Room Tip: upper floors and water view

I have stayed at Armada 4 times in 5 years, and the service has really deteriorated. Staff was ok but not that friendly. No access to roof terrace that weekend because of a wedding, my friend had asked for a non smoking room and she got a smoking room. They did not want to change it because apparently it was full (but it was not), I wanted to book a taxi but they said no need, and when I needed one there were none available etc... I won't go there again, I'll get a better price staying in a boutique hotel of sultanhamet, with good service.

Dear Marine Z.,

Thank you so much for your meaningful and useful comment... We are really sorry to hear that we couldn't be able to please you during your forth stay at our Hotel. Although summer is also wedding season here in Turkey and the Armada Terrace is one of the most demanded venues as of its magnificent view and service, we let it to weddings only at the weekends. And as we never desire our esteemed hotel guests be disturbed because of music and crowd, we open the Indoor Terrace which is next to open Terrace with the transparent roof and walls where it is possible to enjoy the same view during the wedding ceremonies. Coming to unavailability of a non-smoking room for your friend and the taxi problem, we would like you to accept our sincere apologies. If only you decide on a fifth stay we promise you to compensate all the dissatisfaction during the fourth, and send you back with great impressions as before.

Very truly yours,
Armada Management

We recently stayed at the Armada Hotel and were very pleased with the service we received from the staff, especially Ipek Sensilay. My husband is wheelchair bound and they were very accomodating to his needs. The hotel is in a great location in the old city and close to the Bosporus River. The room amenities were very nice (great bed and sheets, olive oil soap, big lighted mirror and magnifying mirror). The only challenge for a handicapped traveler are the steep hills to climb to get to the main attractions - a taxi is required.

If you want to stay at 5-min wall from Topkapi and other main attractions in old Istanbul, this is the hotel for you. Staff is kind and efficient, rooms are new with an old style and perfectly cleaned, sufficient size; bathrooms are brand new, small but all you need is there. The view can be either sea-front or towards the Blue Mosque, the location for me is great (like in a small calm village; tough to believe if you do not know Istanbul).
Breakfast is remarkable (but Turkish coffee comes at an extra cost, same as in other hotels by the way), dinner nice (see my specific review of Armada Terrace if you want). I shall come again, definitely
