We stayed at the Avicenna in February as part of the British Airways deal, The hotel was charming and decor was boutique like. After we had checked in, the lady at reception tried to interest us in some tours, we politely declined and she was fine about it, unlike some other reviews which mention the lady was rude. In fact we chatted to her many times over our 4 night stay.
Food was good, I liked the fact that they added a different Turkish dish to the breakfast menu each morning. The fresh juice is very good but you are charged extra for the fresh juice. My only niggle wlould be that they didnt have scrambled eggs or omelets on the breakfast menus but they did have boiled eggs, but then thats my personal preference. The cakes and biscuits avallable as part of the breakfast were not to my taste, found them to be a bit dry. I did love the fresh selection of bread eveyday and the many jams, honey and preserves availabel each day. Another thing, do be careful when you serve yourself the tea, as it is very strong! you need to only pour a small amount into your cup and then dilute it with the hot water and milk.
Also if you are really lucky then you can get to eat fresh chocolate cake during breakfast if it happens to be a guest's birthday on that particular day. While we were there we managed to have chocolate cake twice. It really was the best chocolate cake ever, just like what you get in Hafiz Mustafa the dessert place in Sultanahment
There were 10 of us in total and we all got different size rooms, I would say avoid the basement rooms by the dining area, as they are very tiny, and only really suitable if you are just going to your room to sleep. We asked to change from the basement rooms as it got very cold for us. we were changed straightaway with no fuss. I would say the Superior Elegance rooms are the best, try to get those rooms, the rooms are decorated in soothing calming colours. Its really nice to walk into after a long day sightseeing and shopping!
The rooms on the first floor are also good, and decorated tastefully. The location is brilliant, we were in walking distance to the local sights and we also managed to get our dinner from the Man in the White Van several times. but be careful , he usually runs out of the chicken and lamb kebabs by 9pm, he is located just before you head upto Araasta bazaar just by the Fish restaurant at the corner.
Overall, a very good stay, the staff were excellent at all times. I would stay here again, we are thinking of returning next year. Oh yes some people on TripAdvisor have complained about the prayer call in the mornings, we only heard it the first morning the rest of the days we were too tired from our sightseeing to notice!
Our rooms faced the main road but this was not a problem, we were not disturbed at all.
