“A lovely stay with friends”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 30, 2014

We stayed at the Avicenna in February as part of the British Airways deal, The hotel was charming and decor was boutique like. After we had checked in, the lady at reception tried to interest us in some tours, we politely declined and she was fine about it, unlike some other reviews which mention the lady was rude. In fact we chatted to her many times over our 4 night stay.

Food was good, I liked the fact that they added a different Turkish dish to the breakfast menu each morning. The fresh juice is very good but you are charged extra for the fresh juice. My only niggle wlould be that they didnt have scrambled eggs or omelets on the breakfast menus but they did have boiled eggs, but then thats my personal preference. The cakes and biscuits avallable as part of the breakfast were not to my taste, found them to be a bit dry. I did love the fresh selection of bread eveyday and the many jams, honey and preserves availabel each day. Another thing, do be careful when you serve yourself the tea, as it is very strong! you need to only pour a small amount into your cup and then dilute it with the hot water and milk.

Also if you are really lucky then you can get to eat fresh chocolate cake during breakfast if it happens to be a guest's birthday on that particular day. While we were there we managed to have chocolate cake twice. It really was the best chocolate cake ever, just like what you get in Hafiz Mustafa the dessert place in Sultanahment

There were 10 of us in total and we all got different size rooms, I would say avoid the basement rooms by the dining area, as they are very tiny, and only really suitable if you are just going to your room to sleep. We asked to change from the basement rooms as it got very cold for us. we were changed straightaway with no fuss. I would say the Superior Elegance rooms are the best, try to get those rooms, the rooms are decorated in soothing calming colours. Its really nice to walk into after a long day sightseeing and shopping!

The rooms on the first floor are also good, and decorated tastefully. The location is brilliant, we were in walking distance to the local sights and we also managed to get our dinner from the Man in the White Van several times. but be careful , he usually runs out of the chicken and lamb kebabs by 9pm, he is located just before you head upto Araasta bazaar just by the Fish restaurant at the corner.

Overall, a very good stay, the staff were excellent at all times. I would stay here again, we are thinking of returning next year. Oh yes some people on TripAdvisor have complained about the prayer call in the mornings, we only heard it the first morning the rest of the days we were too tired from our sightseeing to notice!

Our rooms faced the main road but this was not a problem, we were not disturbed at all.

Room Tip: The superior elegance rooms are the best

We have just returned from a four night stay at the Avicenna. We found the hotel spotlessly clean, the staff speak good English and are very friendly and helpful. There is free tea and coffee in the rooms and the breakfast is very good with plenty of variety. The top floor restaurant has great views across the Bosphorus.

The location is superb. Five minutes walk takes you to the Blue Mosque and the Hagia Sophia yet the hotel is in a very quiet street.

Getting to the hotel from Ataturk is very straightforward. Take the metro from the airport to Zeytinburnu and change onto the tram to Sultanahmet. The whole trip takes about an hour and is really easy to negotiate. The metro and trams are clean, efficient and very good value, it costs 6 Turkish lira per person, buy two jetons (tickets) per person at Ataturk metro as you will use one for the metro and one for the tram. The walk from Sultanahmet tram stop to the hotel takes 5 to 10 minutes and the direction on the hotel website are accurate.

I would definitely use this hotel again.

My friend and I stayed 8 nights in the hotel. Service was always generously given. I wouldn't usually stay in such a nice hotel but we thought our British Airways package was good value. We enjoyed the breakfast which kept most dishes daily and replaced the Turkish treats to keep us interested. Our only complaint was that these Turkish dishes were not kept hot enough in the bain marie. I was really impressed with the good humour of the staff. I was even helped with the online check-in and boarding pass print-out. This was appreciated as the Turkish keyboard defeated me. Thank you Avicenna.

Room Tip: The road in front of the hotel was quiet. We were not bothered by any noise. We noticed upper rooms...

This is a small and a rather charming hotel but definitely not a four star hotel! Breakfast was poor with very limited choice and tasteless food. We didn't get a twin bed as requested. Walls are so thin you can hear people walk in other rooms.

Location is great though and staff are pleasant enough.

My wife and I went to Istanbul for a 4 night spring break, 7th - 11th April 2014, and found this hotel absolutely brilliant for us. We booked the hotel as part of a British Airway package (which was also brilliant) and booked a superior room. Having read a number of Tripadvisor reviews we expected amongst other things a good location, rather cramped rooms, pleasant staff and charges for tea and coffee in the rooms. What we in fact got was a great location, a clean, well furnished comfortable en-suite room with plentiful hot water, a balcony and sea view (room 206), excellent service from all the staff and no charges for tea and coffee in the room. We also ate in the restaurant on the first night and the meal, service and ambiance were all very good. The whole experience was excellent value for money

Room Tip: Go for the superior "Elegance" rooms

Positives

Location: Excellent. Within walking distance of major attractions
Service: Superb. Very responsive and friendly.
Food: Nice breakfast spread. Didn't try their restaurant

Not-so-positive
Rooms are quite small and the bathrooms even smaller. We had two rooms - one with a double bed and the other with two twins. In the room with the two twins there was hardly any space left to move around.
No gym

The service was absolutely faultless - every member of the staff from the cleaners to the manager were friendly, polite and efficient. The rooms were spotless and the location was just perfect. My only issue was with the noise from the next door guests, which is why I'm giving 4 (and a half!) stars. I really, really recommend this place, and I'd certainly stay there again.
