What an amazing welcome to Istanbul! Finding the Arena Hotel proved to be a very lucky experience. Arriving late at night, we were greeted warmly by a very friendly staff who not only helped us to our room but helped us understand the layout of the city and plan our stay. After checking in and enjoying a glass of wine in the lovely outdoor garden, we went for a walk and, to our surprise, found the Blue Mosque to be less then a minute's walk away. Next morning we enjoyed a delightful cooking class in the hotel kitchen which resulted in a fabulously delicious lunch! The room was beautiful, clean and comfortable. The breakfasts were delicious and elegantly presented. The staff was wonderful I would recommend this hotel to anyone planning a trip to Istanbul.

Staff appear to be nice but are very patronising. Very creepy too
Upon our arrival we were almost interrogated by a young member of staff who was clearly trying to determine our political stance and religious belief. We are of middle eastern background and he must have assumed we were Muslim when we are not.
This same staff member insulted Australians and Westerners in general saying that they are "asleep" politically, lacking culture and religion. He also called us "Indian" when we asked him why the prices for the hotel were cheaper online than the price he quoted us. Clearly he was trying to rip us off.
We left our luggage with the staff over night while wen were away on Tour and I suspect that he looked me up on Facebook (which indicates I am Christian) and perhaps looked inside our souvenir bags which contained Christian items from the Vatican. Upon our arrival back to the hotel (at 1am) we were very tired and just wanted our room key. Instead this young imbecile, interrogated us again, insinuating that we lied about our nationality and religion. We never once stated anything about religion. He even looked into my husbands surname in order to gather this fact. It's as if he thought he was "onto us".
He began to mock Christianity and atheist Australians , suggesting we are wrong and he is right. When we were going up to our room, we could hear him and another staff member laughing...all this in a dark office at 1am. I was creeped out that they might do something to us.

I do not recommend that anybody book at this hotel. Is not worth the risk and there are plenty of better hotels nearby. We changed hotels to a cheaper and better /cleaner hotel. Staff don't get too involved and we feel safe.

Arena hotel had awful breakfast and unclean rooms. Some rooms were converted from atticks and so have very low ceilings.
Rooms next door to mosque so the loud prayers can be heard at 5am.

Dear RB,

Thank you for sharing at Trip Advisor.
I would like to tell you that, after we read your comment, our front desk and I first investigated if you really stayed in Arena Hotel or not.
It is right that you stayed in our hotel, and left to take a tour. And although your agent did not book our hotel for your return (second stay in Istanbul), you wanted to stay in our hotel and thus you made the reservation for the second time at Arena Hotel.

Although our staff do not have the characteristics and quality as you described, Arena Hotel Management questioned the staff after your comment. There must be a misleading. Another issue I would like to let you know is, we have a storage room for our guests and all the packages/suitcases left, are stored there. You can also read this from the comments we have at Trip Advisor, that all the guests appreciate that we take care of their belongings in our storage room. So please be sure that no one even touched your stuff when you were away.

We host many guests from all over the world since 1998, without a prejudice to any religion, nationality, language; our well trained staff is providing the best hospitality to our guests. Your comments and thoughts are the first about our hotel. We are very sorry that you felt something as you stated and did not share it when you were in the hotel. It is for sure that there was a misunderstanding.
.
Best Regards,

FIrst of all I found booking online efficient. The location is excellent, within easy walking distance to the Blue Mosque. The staff were welcoming, friendly and had lots of good advice and nothing was ever to much trouble to organise.
The rooms are delightful, spotlessly clean and everything you need is provided.Airport pick up was so useful.

Good value for money.

I highly recommend this hotel

This is the place to stay, if you want old style hospitality. We stayed in two different rooms in the course of a week. We booked on line and also got the staff to organise a pick up from the airport. This hotel is an easy five minute walk from the Blue Mosque. And there is a hop on tour bus just down from the Mosque, all an easy walk from the hotel. Buffet breakfast is worth ordering at time of booking. We went to Gallipoli for an over night stay and the staff at Arena looked after our extra bags.
Would I stay here again or recommend this place to friends......Yes.

Room Tip: We stayed in 308. This end suite has a direct view of the local Mosque. And then stayed in 303 at th...

This hotel certainly lived up to my expectations. It was clean, breakfast was lovely, and the staff was really helpful. The location was perfect and within easy walking distance to most sites. However, we are an active couple in our late 20s, so the walk could be a bit much for the elderly and/or those less fit, which would explain some of the previous reviews. The only thing that was a little annoying is that our room was directly under the reception and you could hear the phone ring throughout the night. The staff held our luggage after we checked out and called us a taxi to the airport. Everything went smoothly. Thanks!

Room Tip: Do not get the room directly under the reception. It is noisy at night.

I cannot say enough good things about the lovely Arena Hotel in the Old City part of Istanbul. We stayed in one of their newer rooms, which was beautiful -- though not much of a view -- the room was great!
The staff is helpful and friendly. The room very clean. We took them up on their offer of arranging a private tour guide for us, and it was a busy, but highly informative morning with Burcu.
Located right next to a mosque (hard to escape in this town) so prayers were frequent and immediate!

Room Tip: We didn't see any rooms in the older part of the hotel, but the new room was great.
