The Celal Sultan Hotel, Istanbul, is a GEM within this busy city. A lovely, central, hotel which provides everything required by the tourist or traveller. Good food in the wonderful terraced restuarant overlooking Agios Sophia, and courteous friendly staff. This is a well run clean and comfortable hotel with a touch of class, combining traditional and modern facilities. Quite a find in this beautiful city

The Celal Sultan is well located in Sultanahment, a stone's throw and non-blistering walk to the Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace and the Grand Bazaar (also a 10-minute walk to a reasonable and clean Hamman - a bit touristy but with all the frills). We stayed in what was billed as a suite, really a large 4th floor room furnished in Ottoman kitsch and with a balcony. The bathroom was large, tub with claw legs, two sinks, decent amenities. From the balcony, we could see the mosques and the upper floors of neighboring, somewhat decaying apartment houses. We thought this view to be anything but negative, but it is an acquired taste - a somewhat dreary, slightly mysterious landscape that captures the morphing Istanbul that Nobel Prize-winning author Orhan Pamuk writes about. The hotel day staff is very helpful and offers honest recommendations about tours and restaurants (although we preferred tripping over neighborhood eateries). The younger bell staff are superbly attentive but never underfoot, racing outside to open cab doors, help with baggage, bring food up to the room, reopen the top-floor restaurant for late-night dessert - the list goes on. One advance suggestion: If you need special amenities as we did (down pillows), make sure the day desk staff is your facilitator because getting needs across to the housekeepers requires a capacity to communicate in Turkish. We are veterans of top-of-the-line hotels (including those in Istanbul), and while the Celal Sultan is not that, it is truly nifty - and much more fun than stuffed shirt America-away-from-home places to bed down.

We stayed here for 9 nights and the reason I would recommend this hotel is that first of all the staff are not only friendly they are also very helpful and informative, nothing is too much trouble. The rooms are clean and have everything you could want including a very comfortable bed, a great shower and tea and coffee making facilities, mini bar and of course, very important in the summer, air conditioning.

One of the highlights of the hotel is the rooftop terrace which not only offers superb views over some of the most beautiful sights the city has to offer, it is the perfect place to have an evening drink(s) and watch the sun go down. The breakfast is substantial with a lot to choose from and food in the restaurant is also very good and dinner on the terrace is a real treat.

On top of all that, most of the main sights are within a short walking distance and the nearest tram stop is only 5 minutes walk away.

This hotel could not be more convenient to sights, transportation, restaurants, etc, but at the same time is quiet and very comfortable. Staff are friendly and very helpful, breakfast was great, room was comfortable and clean, good bathroom. My room was a single, and small, but I really enjoyed retreating to it at the end of a long day of exploring. I will definitely stay here the next time I'm in Istanbul and will recommend it to others. My only small 'complaint' is that there was not enough lighting in the room to read comfortably and there could have been more light in the bathroom for shaving, etc., but this seems to be the way things are in most hotels these days.

If I go back to Istanbul I would definitely go back to this hotel.
