The Alzer is a beautiful hotel in a fantastic location. The terrace where you have breakfast is a highlight. Try and get the front corner booth behind the coffee station for a great view of the Blue Mosque and the water. The only thing i would say is you get hassled A LOT when walking down the Hippodrome by men wanting you to buy tour books or book Bosphorus cruises (but that happens most places in Istanbul). It's very close to the tram line and walking distance from the Blue Mosque, Aya Sophia, the Cistern, the Palace and the Grand Bazaar.

Alzer hotel is opposite the Blue Mosque and if you are lucky to get a room on the fifth floor overlooking it, it's magic
The room was clean and the bathroom new, large-and the towels, fluffy. The view from the roof terrace breakfast room was spectacular as was the breakfast which was included in the tariff. There is also a lift, thank goodness.

Unless you're willing and capable of expending five to six times the amount to stay at the Four Seasons (which is a block or two *off* the Hippodrome), you can't go wrong with the Hotel Alzer. With absolutely winning personalities in every staff member, from the front cafe to the breakfast lounge, our ten-day stay was perfectly situated, quiet (sure, the muezzin do a call early every morning, but you expect that, of course), clean, and just what we needed to mix business with pleasure. The Internet connection and wifi are readily accessible, included in the price of the room, and reliable. Television is cable satellite with more channels than I knew what to do, with every possible language imaginable represented. Would I stay there again? I travel a *lot* for work and there's no hesitation that this is my hotel when I'm back in Istanbul.

We had stayed here a few years ago and had good memories of the hotel, so when we were planning a visit with some friends we booked again. The Alzer is not a 5 * with all the glitzy addons but it is a superbly firendly hotel with a location to die for - across the street from the Blue Mosque and 5 minutes from Hagia Sofia and Topkapi.
The rooms are comfortable and beds are firm - that suits our taste but it may not suit some, and the walls are quite thin so hope that you don't get a noisy neighbour!
The staff - particularly those in the cafe/restaurant at the front of the hotel - are very friendly and helpful. The buffet breakfast is varied and plentiful - setting you up for a day of sightseeing. The views from the breakfast room are spectacular! Can highly recommend this hotel.

I was a first time visitor to Istanbul for 3 nights and four days at the end of March, 2013 with my son and his girlfriend from Vienna. We had a fabulous time and large credit goes to the Alzer Hotel. The staff was very friendly and helpful, particularly Ahmet, the maitre d of the sidewalk cafe that fronts this small, cozy hotel. We chose a "hippodrome" room which sleeps 3 with a queen and trundle bed. It was small but both clean and well appointed. The Alzer Hotel is the only hotel located on the perimeter of the original Hippodrome or coliseum built during Roman times and now a large public square in the Sultanahmet (historical) area of Istanbul. It's positioned directly across the square from the Blue Mosque--having a Turkish coffee or cold beer while listening to the call to prayer from Istanbul's most famous mosque.....that was worth the price of the room right there. We were fortunate to enjoy great weather, but regardless, the Alzer is within walking distance of virtually all the major historical sites as well as the Grand Bazaar and Spice Bazaar shopping areas. The room price of under $200 per night included a full breakfast for the three of us at their rooftop restaurant. I would highly recommend this property.

Room Tip: The hippodrome rooms face the front of the hotel for a view of the Blue Mosque; expect the early mo...

The location of this hotel must be second to none. It's opposite the Blue Mosque and just down the road from the Hagia Sophia and the Topkapi Palace. The staff were friendly and the rooms comfortable and the hotel had a very Turkish (as opposed to internationally anonymous) feel. The buffet breakfast was excellent and taken in the rooftop dining room, which has panoramic views of the Blue Mosque and the Bosphorus. On the down side, the walls are thin and if you have noisy neighbours, you might hear more than you want to. It's therefore probably not an ideal place to stay with children. There's also a slightly random approach to what is in the rooms - bedspreads might suddenly appear or disappear, etc.. But these are relatively minor issues. We enjoyed our stay and found it an ideal base for a few days in Istanbul.

The location of the hotel is excellent, very, very close to the Blue Mosque and loads of other attractions. There is tram system very close also which let's you buzz accross town very rapidly. Don't forget to purchase your token close to the tram stop, 3TL about €1.3. The machine takes notes also.
