We stayed here because we had an early morning flight. It was relatively close to Ataturk airport and was less expensive than other airport hotels. It is about half way between the airport and the old city. The check in staff was extremely helpful giving us directions back into Istanbul for some last time shopping. We took a taxi to the metro (14TL) and then the metro to the Grand Bazaar (3TL). It took about an hour. The Atakoy is a large hotel and has a great view of the marina. The furnishing could use some updates but it is clean. There is a shuttle to the airport but it does not start running until about 7 AM. Taxi to airport costs about 30TL. There is a breakfast included if you pay more in your room rate. We were leaving before it was served so we did not include it in our rate. Alcohol is extremely expensive at the hotel.

There is a whole string of restaurants within a very short walk. The restaurants serve a lot of American food which we were excited to have after two weeks of Turkish food. We ate at SanSenDo. We had hamburgers and they were delicious. The food was a little expensive and alcohol was a little more expensive than other places in Turkey. These restaurants seem to be very popular with the locals and all the restaurants were very busy.

Room Tip: The restaurants stay open late and are noisy (at least on a Friday night). We were in block 4 of the hotel so I recommend block 1 or 2 because they are further away from the restaurants.

We booked this hotel due to its location close to a trade fair we had to visit and its proximity to the Sheraton. Unfortunately the Sheraton was fully booked but we had to be close to business partners staying there.
The booking was done through an international website with a good reputation and has been used by us a number of times. The payment was done in advance and the booking confirmed for executive rooms. Upon arrival we were told that the Hotel decided to cancel our booking the day before and apparently told the agent/website about this so we cannot be given rooms. However, if we do want to stay they would offer us standard rooms for double the price of an executive room! Having called the internet agency we were told that such a cancellation has not been received, that the payment has been made and that the Hotel's acting was outrageous. They had to get their legal department involved to talk to the Hotel a couple of times. We were told not to make any payment and were made to wait for a couple of hours until this issue had been solved.
Absolutely unacceptable behaviour of the Hotel. They simply wanted to cash-in! In the end, after hours, they were forced to apologise to us - reluctantly - and even claimed they would upgrade as to compensate for the apparant misunderstanding. The upgrade was an executive room - something we had already booked and paid for anyway!!!!
What we had experienced there was so unbelieveable that I even find it difficult to put it into the right words. How can they think they can get away with charging people more than twice by simply claiming they have the right to cancel bookings if they decide to increase prices over night because they realised (obviously too late!) that other Hotels charge more during trade fair times.
Rooms are not nice either. Nor is the breakfast. There is such a huge choice of Hotels in Istanbul. Just stay somewhere else!

The ONLY redeeming feature of this hotel is that they have a free airport shuttle. Look at the pics. It's a 1 or 2 star hotel at 4* prices. If it ever was a Holiday Inn, it must have been 25 or 30 years go when it was new. And nothing has been done to maintain, let alone upgrade since. The broken toilet, the tattered settee, the frayed towels and peeling paint? Don't stay here even at 2 star prices.

Room Tip: Pick a different hotel if you want a good room.

Ok, maybe an overreaction to the room that was in terrible shape, and smelled terrible. After we paid 300 USD, we did expect something better. There are a ton of other ridiculously priced hotels in Istanbul, but at least the quality is usually pretty decent.

The staff was substantially better than the hotel, though.

I hate to be the one complaining again...but here goes. I see that my comments are going to be in line with other recent reviews. This hotel was built sometime in the 1980's...and its the same story as so often happens; nothing has been done to it since then. To say it is 'tired' is an understatement. This could also be said of the staff who range from helpful to useless.

The internet is dreadful and only works in the lobby, or when no one else is using the system in the same block of rooms.

The rooms were excellent when new I am sure. But nothing has been done to them in years. I suspect the beds need de-bugging as I was bitten badly a few days ago. I asked for the room to be cleaned properly but the request was ignored. The carpet is tired and dirty (which may be where the bugs came from) and the air conditioning is a noisy box in the corner which merely recirculates the air.

I am part of a group of people who work for a Turkish company and when we are required to be in Istanbul they put us in this hotel because it is cheap (about $70 per night). Several of my colleagues refuse to stay here for health reasons, preferring the more modern but remote Wow Hotel close to the main airport.

Breakfast is basic and has remained absolutely unchanged for at least the last year to my certain knowledge. Edible but basic!

The real problem is that for quite some time now it has been owned by the Sheraton Hotel which is next door. Sheraton are really not interested in this little 'rest house' at the bottom of the hill so nothing gets done. Its all very depressing.

I would class this hotel as a borderline Three Star; in some respects it is a Two but certainly not a Four. The sad part is that it would be quite easy to restore the hotel due to its construction in four blocks. One could be done at a time with minimum inconvenience...but Sheraton seem not to be interested. There are many better alternatives in Istanbul.
