Owner description: The Chora Church (Turkish Kariye Müzesi, Camii yahut Kilisesi — variously the Chora Museum, Mosque or Church) is considered to be one of the most beautiful examples of a Byzantine church. The church is situated in the western, Erdinekapı district of İstanbul. In the 16th century, the church was converted into a mosque by the Ottomon rulers, and it became a secularised museum in 1948. The interior of the building is covered with fine mosaics and frescoes.

This old Greek church has the best preserved Byzantine art in Istanbul, a real pleasure to see after Aya Sophia where the art heritage has been ruined. It is a bit tricky to get to, and the nave was closed for restoration when we visited, but it is still well worth the effort

we visiting this church after having visited the Greek Orthodox church. Very intersting, with amazing mosaics, unfortunately the main church is closed for renovations, which is something we hit quite a lot...

The number and quality of mosaics and frescoes from the later Byzantine Empire make this church one of the most important repositories of Byzantine art in the world, hidden away in an ordinary middle-class neighborhood, near the old city walls.

it is a historical church that was turned into mosque during religious upheaval of the country. As a result of that, all the beautiful micro mosaic painting were then covered up by Islamic drawings. And the beautiful paintings is now recovered for the world to see. Gorgeous.

The frescoes inside this small museum and former house of worship are incredible. Included is one of the very rare depictions of Jesus' step brother, another son of Joseph.
