Owner description: The Chora Church (Turkish Kariye Müzesi, Camii yahut Kilisesi — variously the Chora Museum, Mosque or Church) is considered to be one of the most beautiful examples of a Byzantine church. The church is situated in the western, Erdinekapı district of İstanbul. In the 16th century, the church was converted into a mosque by the Ottomon rulers, and it became a secularised museum in 1948. The interior of the building is covered with fine mosaics and frescoes.

Beautiful mosaics and murals inside. Free entry with the Museumkarte. Although the main space is closed for refurbishment most of the artwork is in the areas which are accessible. Excellent tea garden just outside and we also climbed up onto the old walls nearby (only for the agile) and had a great view over the city.

“Don't look down! ”
Reviewed July 26, 2014 via mobile

This great little church out west. It's a bit far from the other Istanbul attractions, but definitely worth a look if you have time. The draw are the mosaics dating back hundreds of years, of biblical significance, such as that of Jesus and Mary. The pictures are stunning and the attention to detail incredible and are littered across the ceilings and walls. So don't look down, or you'll miss it all! Unfortunately couldn't see everything as part of the church was being restored, but glad we went.

“Smallest but greatest site”

Make a point of stepping away from Sultanahmet for this jewel of a church, absolutely stunning in spite of the ongoing work that closed a large part of it. Must see.

I missed this church the first time we were in Istanbul, so this time, I was determined to see it. It's a little hard to get to, but the frescoes are so beautiful and so well-preserved, it was worth the effort. We took the tram to Eminonu, then crossed over to the Otogar and waited for a bus. If you're pressed for time, take a taxi.

“Do not miss this experience - best Byzantine Church in Istanbul”
Reviewed July 23, 2014

This was an humbling experience. The art is incredible - but it was more of a spiritual experience for us. Not easy to get to - but worth the effort. We took a taxi to the church and then walked back after touring the nearby City Walls. If you are on a package tour that does not include this Church/Museum - strike out on your own and visit.
