Owner description: The Chora Church (Turkish Kariye Müzesi, Camii yahut Kilisesi — variously the Chora Museum, Mosque or Church) is considered to be one of the most beautiful examples of a Byzantine church. The church is situated in the western, Erdinekapı district of İstanbul. In the 16th century, the church was converted into a mosque by the Ottomon rulers, and it became a secularised museum in 1948. The interior of the building is covered with fine mosaics and frescoes.

“A gem”

Beautiful mosiacs, especially since those in Hagia Sophia are partially blocked off. Avoid the crowds when the cruise ships dock. Plan to spend the better part of two hours.

So many beautiful and expressive mosaics. Be sure you have a guide book for explanations,so you get the most out what you are seeing.

“Worthwhile visiting.”
Reviewed November 11, 2013

Although a little out of the way, the Kariye Museum is well worth visiting for the excellent mosaics. Take the metro to the Edimekapi station and walk through the old western wall of the city. Follow signs to the right or ask someone for directions.

“Religious pilgrimage”
Reviewed November 11, 2013

We visited this on our pilgrimage via the Greek Orthodox Church. This is incredible. Be sure to have a guide who can explain all of the mosaics and murals.
