Owner description: The Chora Church (Turkish Kariye Müzesi, Camii yahut Kilisesi — variously the Chora Museum, Mosque or Church) is considered to be one of the most beautiful examples of a Byzantine church. The church is situated in the western, Erdinekapı district of İstanbul. In the 16th century, the church was converted into a mosque by the Ottomon rulers, and it became a secularised museum in 1948. The interior of the building is covered with fine mosaics and frescoes.

It's a fairly lengthy taxi ride from Sultanahmet, where we stayed, but absolutely worth it. The mosaics seemed, to me, to be even better than ones at Hagia Sofia.

Wonderful mosaics and it's a not expensive attraction.

It's a bit out of hand but it's definitely worthy to go there.

We walked all the way from the Grand Bazaar, enjoying 2 major mosques, a University campus, and lots of not-touristic streets. It's not an easy walk (some streets to climb up and down), but it's extremely authentic (if you don't follow the main road).

Thank Marco A

We had to take a tram to the nearest station and then walk for a good 20 mins asking people around for the place. I must say it wasnt as close as i had thought (may be there was a shorter way and i didnt know of it) but when i did come there it was nice. The museum is less crowded than the attractions in the sultanahmet area, but still there was a steady group of tourists around. The place in itself is full of rich history and i would suggest using one of the audio explanations available of 5 TY to be used to understand the background of each image present there.

Beautiful church. I visited in the afternoon. The place had some crowd but not packed like Ayasofya. Highly recommend. If you traveling by yourself from Sultanahmet, take the TRAM to Aksaray then transfer the Metro at Aksaray, get off at Topkapi Ulubatli. After go up to the road and take the yellow mini bus (1.5 LT). Tell the driver you wanna get off at Kariye Musezi. At Topkapi Ulubatli make sure you ask the security which exit you should take as there are two.

While a bit out-of-the way and difficult to find compared to the other major sites of Istanbul, Chora Church is very interesting. I very much suggest that you give yourself an extra hour or two to explore the neighborhood in the area!
