It took several tries for me to make it to Kariye. First it was closed and then it was too late in the day. I ended up going first thing in the morning, and that was perfect. Only two tour groups had ventured out for the opening at 9 AM, so I had ample time without the crowds to view these magnificent treasures. If you a well versed in the scriptures, you can easily understand most of what is pictured in the mosaics and frescoes, but if you are not familiar with Christian Gospels, then a guide book wil be supremely helpful. One hint, buy your post cards across the way...they are cheaper and bigger than inside the museum.
