Owner description: The Chora Church (Turkish Kariye Müzesi, Camii yahut Kilisesi — variously the Chora Museum, Mosque or Church) is considered to be one of the most beautiful examples of a Byzantine church. The church is situated in the western, Erdinekapı district of İstanbul. In the 16th century, the church was converted into a mosque by the Ottomon rulers, and it became a secularised museum in 1948. The interior of the building is covered with fine mosaics and frescoes.

“An expensive visit”
Reviewed October 8, 2012

I don't know much about Byzantine art, and maybe if I did I would have been more amazed by what were, in fact, some very nice mosaics, but it was an expensive visit, between the taxi rides, admission fee, renting the audio guide, etc. Also, once we exited (almost by accident), we could not get back in to easily return the audio guides, or use the toilets! The place had the feel of a tourist trap, although I am sure it is much more than that. The crowds of tourists, being led by their guides, in what is a fairly cramped space, did not help either. Not sorry I went, but did not think this was the #2 attraction in Istanbul!!

“Completely worthwhile”
Reviewed October 8, 2012

Although we had to travel by taxi to get there, it was completely worth the trip. Many stories from the Bible were displayed as colorful mosaics in stunning detail.

“Not to be missed !!”
Reviewed October 8, 2012

What a pleasant surprise. The Chora Church is 15-20 minutes out of downtown Istambul. On the ruins of Constantinople is this beautiful church with amazing bizanthine frescoes and mosaics showing scenes from the most relevant moments of the life of Christ.
Second to none in its own art by its own merits.
Not to be missed !!

“overcrowded”
Reviewed October 8, 2012

The church itself is beautiful but there were too many other people also wanting to see the mosaics! Our fault for not going when it opened.

“Beautiful Byzantine mosaics!”
Reviewed October 7, 2012

Kariye Museum is off the beaten path in Istanbul and requires taking the Metro and walking a bit or catching a cab (easy to do in Istanbul). But what a worthwhile experience! Beautiful and educational, this small church has mosaics that are stunning. Take a tour or buy a guide book, as you will learn so much!
