Owner description: The Chora Church (Turkish Kariye Müzesi, Camii yahut Kilisesi — variously the Chora Museum, Mosque or Church) is considered to be one of the most beautiful examples of a Byzantine church. The church is situated in the western, Erdinekapı district of İstanbul. In the 16th century, the church was converted into a mosque by the Ottomon rulers, and it became a secularised museum in 1948. The interior of the building is covered with fine mosaics and frescoes.

“Small, but stunning mosaics you should not miss!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 6, 2012

This church shows the extent of Orthodox Christian creativity, creating mosaics in the ceilings and walls of Biblical scenes that appear dazzling and new even though centuries old. You need both super-wide lens and telephoto to capture both the splendor and the detail of this marvelous church.

“Escape from the tour groups”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 6, 2012

What a delight. I never would have sought out this small church if it weren't rated so highly on TA. Had just come from Topkapi Palace totally overrun by tour groups and found this a uncrowded calm environment. The mosaics were absolutely stunning. I might have paid 30 euro each way for the taxi which may be high, as you can't easily take the tram. But it was worth it and was my favorite place I saw.

It is so unbelievable that we can see such old pieces of art. Church is in the middle of neighbourhood with small houses. Small but making very big impression. Mosaics are magnificent. Ticket => 15tl.
