Side Hotel and Pension
Ranked #286 of 1,178 Hotels in Istanbul

This may not be a 5 star establishment, but besides being in a great location for exploring Old Istanbul, the Side Hotel is truly a wonderfully clean, comfortable and accommodating hotel. We stayed in the Hotel portion and the rooms were spacious and extremely clean and well maintained. The staff was very helpful and willing to assist with transportation, baggage storage and information. Included with the room is a nice breakfast each morning with patio view of the city. If you are in Istanbul to view the sites and have an old world experience.........consider staying at the Side Hotel.

The Side hotel is located within a block or two of the Blue Mosque and the Hagia Sophia in the heart of the Sultanahmet district. The rooms are spacious and clean and the prices are very reasonable. We chose the hotel part and paid 80 euros for a room with 2 beds. We met a couple who were in the Pension part and had the same room for 60 euros - the only difference was no TV! So, if TV is not important you can save some $. The staff were very friendly and the only minor complaint was that breakfasts had limited appeal - nescafe, a boiled egg and bread and cheese - though you can pay extra for an omelette.

I stayed at the Pension back in August. Great location and easy access to all of the main sites. Friendly staff. Clean facilities. No air conditioning in pension rooms so be warned. For what it was, I found the pension to be somewhat over priced. For the same amount of money, one could stay in a number of similarly located hostels or pensions that have both air conditioning and a buffet breakfast. Again, nothing wrong with the Side breakfast, but it is a plate given to you rather than a buffet. Also if you are a light sleeper be aware that being so close to the mosque means a very loud call to prayer that will likely wake you up.

I had a 24 hour layover on my flight from Nepal to Chicago, and chose to stay at Side Hotel & Pension in Old Istanbul. The hotel arranged my transportation to and from the airport (which was terrific), and my room was ready for me when I arrived. The hotel has a very old-world feel to it...very warm and romantic. My room and bed were very comfortable. The location just cannot be beat. Only about a 5 minute walk to the Blue Mosque and many other attractions. Lots and lots of restaurants and cafe's...all within easy walking distance. Beware, the vendors on the street are relentless. Learn to say NO! I give the Side Hotel & Pension a "10"!

This is my 2nd visit here and I have recommended this hotel to family members who have stayed here also.
We always stay on the pension side- cheaper and has everything we need.
The rooms aren't huge but the bathrooms are modern and tiled. A fan keeps you cool.
You couldn't get closer to the Blue Mosque- and the street is very quiet. Tea & Coffee free in the foyer. Also free safes & luggage storage.
Typical Turkish breakfast, lovely terrace with great views. Indoor seating in bad weather. Friendly staff.
On our return after visiting Ephesus, we were given a huge room with a couch in it. Very much appreciated.
Don't use the travel agent next door. Have got quotes from them on 2 occasions and they have always been more expensive than other companies.
We stayed here in June 2012- apologies for the late review. Definitely will stay again when we come back to Turkey!

We truly enjoyed our two stays at the Side. We split our Istanbul time to the beginning and end of our trip. This is a superb location, walking distance to Aya Sofia, the Blue Mosque, the Cisterns, the Topkapi Palace. Great, though touristy, restaurants abound nearby.

The breakfast never varied, except for the piece of fruit, but was substantial and very good.

We stayed on the Pension side. The rooms are extremely clean but there is no air conditioning, which wasn't a problem in September. They vary greatly in size and location, so if you get a small or noisy one, see if they have something better.

The staff is helpful and there are informational write-ups to answer most questions a first-time Istanbul visitor would have. Free tea all day and night in the library.

This family run hotel is spotless, and convenient to all the main sites in Sultanahmet. Its rather basic with no luxuries, and lack some ambiance and warmth. But its walking distance to everything. The breakfast deck has so much more potential than the un- appetising platter of bread, olives and a hard boiled egg. And whats with the Turkish TV? Do you really have more locals staying with you than Int'l guests who dont understand a word of Turkish?
