“Superb location and good price”
Reviewed June 21, 2013

If you want to stay in Sultanhamet when in Istanbul this is definitely a good choice. Located just behind Hagia Sofia and the Blue Mosque it's walking distance to all the usual sights and very well connected (5 minutes walk from the tram stop - very useful when traveling to Ataturk Airport).

The pension is located in a little side street so there shouldn't be any noise bothering you, I would suggest to pick a room on the second floor to avoid any unwanted street noises but to be honest I did not really hear anything when staying on the ground floor either.

I booked a double room that was clean, tidy, recently refurbished (very colourful) with a good shower and all the usual commodities. Breakfast was buffet style on the beautiful terrace with a view on the Blue Mosque (picture attached).

The staff speak english and are all very helpful, they can help you organising shuttles to the airport if you are not willing to take the public transport.

Definitely worth going

Room Tip: Try the second floor to avoid any noise from the street below. It's a side street anyway so ther...

Stayed 5 nights in the pension in early June. Our room was facing a street with sea views if you craned your head out the window. The room was very spacious (for Turkey) with an ensuite and was clean and simple. No air-con just a fan. Rooms were cleaned every day and towels changed. The location is amazing. From the roof terrace both the Blue Mosque & Hagia Sofia are visible as well as the Sea of Marmara. Just a short stroll and you are in front of the best 2 buildings in Istanbul. Breakfast was somewhat boring consisting of a boiled egg, bread, jams, cucumber, tomato & olives every day. Staff were friendly. Great stay overall.

We had 3 rooms in the Side Pension and our only complaint, if you could call it a complaint, is that the rooms were very small for two people. The breakfast is minimal but adequate and the staff helpful and interesting. the locale is superb and in walking distance to the Sultanhamet, Topkapi and Blue Mosque plus the trams are also close. There are excellent restaurants everywhere and in walking distance. We would recommend this hotel to anyone.

We had five great days in Istanbul and staying here contributed to an affordable vacation. For value and price you can't beat the Side Hotel (pronounced see-day) and its location in the Sultanahmet area is perfect, just a few minutes’ walk to the Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace and the Basilica Cistern. These sites are literally just around the corner, making this hotel extremely convenient, especially if you are short on time in Istanbul. The Side Hotel is a spotless, modest establishment; the rooms are on the small side without a lot of furniture, but its beds are comfortable and the ensuite baths have plenty of hot water. A pleasing color scheme along with Interesting architectural detailing adorning the wood moldings and interior hallway arches, make this an attractive hotel. There is a wonderful open spiral staircase that leads to the large rooftop terrace. A simple breakfast of cheese, tomatoes, cucumbers, olives, hard-boiled egg, bread, jam and coffee is served here every morning. It's a splendid spot to watch the morning sun rise and cast its warmth onto the minarets of Hagia Sophia. In the evening admire the silhouetted dome and minarets of the Blue Mosque as the sun sets behind it and listen to the muezzin of several nearby mosques call people to evening prayer. The Istanbul tram system is easy and inexpensive, just locate the token kiosk, this automated system has instruction available in several languages - just like an ATM. The Sultanahmet tram station is located on the far side of Sultanahmet Park. This line will take you down the hill to the Spice Market, Bosphorus ferries and over the Galata bridge to the new district. From here you can also take the tram two stops uphill to the Grand Bazaar. From the airport take the Metro system to the Cankurtaran stop in Sultanahmet, and the hotel is only few blocks away, but it’s an uphill walk.
The Wi-Fi signal is good throughout the hotel and on the rooftop terrace. Coffee and tea is available at no charge all day in the common area by the reception desk. The surrounding blocks and Akbiyid Caddesi offer all sorts of great options for dining. We got one of our best tips from a waiter at lunch who was having fun working with us on our Turkish pronunciation, who suggested we get the Museum Card from a kiosk. It's good for 72 hours and will enable you to bypass the extremely long lines of folks queuing up to buy tickets.
Hit the sites early or late, before or after the busloads of tourists.

We stayed for four nights in the Pension side. The location is very good and close to all the Sultanahmet attractions.
Price is good value, rooms are clean and breakfast is fine.
Staff very helpful and the only minor niggle is patchy wi fi.
Would definitely stay there again.

My Turkish Air flight through Istanbul arrived at 3:30PM one day and left at 12:45PM the following day, so I made the decision to book one night at the SIde Pension and transport from and to the airport. My room was 50 Euros and transport each direction was 30 Euros, so 110 Euros for room and transportation. Room 29 was on the same floor with the breakfast room and its window looked out on a balcony used for storage, but the room itself--although basic--was very clean and functional. It got a little warm early in the evening, but was comfortable for sleeping all night (this was in May--if you came when the weather was very warm you might wish for air conditioning). There were two men on the desk--an older man who was warm and gracious and a younger man who was more gruff. Both provided satisfactory service. The breakfast was fine--boiled egg, cucumbers, tomatoes, bread, butter and tea or instant coffee. An omelet and Turkish coffee would have been a little extra. The location was just outstanding: after I checked in at about 4:30 PM, I was able to walk the three blocks to the visitor entrance to the Blue Mosque and spend some time inside (see separate review). At right angles to the Blue Mosque, and perhaps 4-5 blocks down a plaza/park was the Hagia Sophia, which was closed by the time I arrived. Although the actual "Grand Bazaar" is huge and fairly intimidating, the Arasta Bazaar near the Blue Mosque was a great place to pick up towels, ceramics and spices (see separate review). Lots of excellent restaurants also within walking distance.

Room Tip: Room 29 was on the same (upper) floor as the breakfast room. No view or special amenities, but a goo...
