Within walking distance of all the major attractions, Sultanahmet is a great base for the first time visitor. The tram offers a nice alternative for tired legs, but most of the area can be canvassed on foot. There are heaps of eateries, souvenir shops and lots of activity day and night, so safety is not really an issue even if you are travelling alone. Gulhane Park-- in the middle of the district --offers a wonderful respite from the busy-ness of the streets (there are some gorgeous tea houses at the end of the park overlooking the Bospherous). Unless you are a heavy sleeper, look for where the nearest mosque is to your accommodation and plan accordingly.

We stayed at the Ada Hotel n the Sultanahmet district. As we drove in I wondered about the obvious antiquity of the area and whether we had made a colossal mistake. How wrong I was. The area was enchanting. On our first afternoon, we walked two blocks up a hill and came out onto the Hippodrome and the Blue Mosque. I fell in love with the area and nothing occurred to change my mind. This was truly ancient Istanbul/ Constantinople. Everywhere you walked, and you could walk everywhere, you encountered historical sites. Plus the area had great restaurants and shops. The shop keepers were friendly and answered questions readily. We spoke only English but had no problems communicating. We were out into the evening hours and always felt safe, wherever we walked. What a great introduction to Turkey!

You have to just explore this area. It is truly the heart of Istanbul and the reason to visit. Go thru the bazaar, visit the mosques, see the churches and visit the palaces and parks.

The old town of Istanbul. Very friendly people around that help you get around. Loads of tourists like on every other historical place like this but for us it never felt crowded since it is a fairly big place.
I can really recommend going away from the main streets and just walk around and take in the atmosphere of the area.
