A wonderful area, full of life and lots of helpful people and we never felt unsafe. The loos are not very good, much better off going to the ones in the Grand Bazaar! Just wonder around and enjoy all the ancient sites.

Sultanahmet District has been settled for a millenium (at least) and the historic centre of present-day Istanbul from Byzantium through Constantinople until the present. There is so much to see and do here that some travelers never leave. There are mosques of great beauty, the Topkapi Palace, the Bazaars, trams to "faraway places" like Galata, ferries across the Bosphorous and to the Black Sea, and more carpets than you can shake a stick at. It also contains a little visited museum just below the Blue Mosque in the Arasta Bazaar. Called the Mosaic Museum it is a recently discovered and restored floor of the great Palace of Byzantium. It is an astonishing insight into ordinary behaviour of the Fifth century. There are children playing hoops, a man milking a goat, a monkey catching birds, animals some domestic, some fantastical from long ago. It shoud NOT be missed.

Loved the whole area! Had been on safari in Africa prior to this and also in South America. We felt totally safe in this area. It was bustling with people all the time but this just added to the atmosphere. Without a map, we just wandered off and explored, often finding ourselves away from the main drag passing through old residential areas where inhabitants perched on stairs and peered through windows, always friendly and acknowledging our attempts at Turkish greetings. In the more touristy areas there are scores of eating places to suit every budget; also heaps of litte shops selling, well, everything. Visited twice, both during the demonstrations - you would never have guessed there was unrest in the city at all. Will definitely return :)
