This area in the heart of the old city was my least favorite neighborhood in Istanbul. In my opinion, it's completely ruined by carpet/kilim/jewlery/tourist shops and tour buses as far as the eye can see. The only good time to visit this area is early in the morning before the tour buses and hordes of package tourists show up and ruin the atmosphere. One day is enough to see the obligatory sites. I preferred staying in Galata, Taksim, and even Sirkeci (which still has a sliver of realness) than Sultanahmet.

If you are visitng Istanbul for the very first time, you should not hesitate to stay at this old neighborhood. This is the timeless Istanbul, where the most iconic sites in the city can be discover by foot! You actually have the tram to go everywhere in this area, as other parts of the city too. Istanbul offers great means of transportation options. Sultanahmd is: great mosques, palaces, bizantium, roman and ottoman legacy, good restaurants, nice shops, safe, clean and very turkish!

Majority of places to visit are all found in the Sultanahmet district.
The Blue Mosque, The Hagia Sophia, The Basilica Cistern, Museum of Turkish & Islamic Arts, Hippodrome and the fountains of Sultanahmet square are all located here.
Excellent place to visit, relax and watch thw qorld go by. Lots of nice places to sit and relax.

The Sultanahmet District is the old city and houses so many of the famous buildings for which Istanbul is famous, the Blue Mosque, Hagis Sophia, Topkapi Palace and of course the Grand Bazaar. The tram runs right through the middle and a ride to anywhere costs only 3 TL. Full of laughter and smiling faces.

Walking distance to all attractions and restaurants. Felt safe walking at night. Direct drive from airport.
