This was a business trip for a conference centred around the hotel. This is a real high quality place, and everything worked perfectly for us, all arrangements made by the hotel worked like clockwork.
Rooms are well set out and we had a view of the Bosphorus, breakfasts were excellent with enough choice for all nationalities. The organised meals were also well done, with all tables being served at the same time. The highlight of the conference was dinner in the original Palace ballroom, if you get the opportunity to dine there it is a real treat.
Location was perfect, right on the Bosphorus, and close to shops and cafes. Would definitely return for a weekend or longer break.

One of the best experiences in Istanbul. This hotel was a palace before. Great service, great view and food.

It is important to understand that I am more of a boutique hotel kind of person than a "grand dame" hotel kind of person. The Ciragan Palace falls into the latter category. It is typical of many old hotels around the world that have a spectacular architectural centerpiece (the palace) and a modern, more generic addition that houses most of the rooms. While the Bosphorous view from our room was beautiful, the room itself was a nicely decorated and well appointed box. Each room essentially identical. It is astronomically expensive, and seems to cater to people who like to be catered to. The service, while impeccable, felt impersonal and formal, in a very rehearsed way. It didn't feel warm or particularly personal. Two exceptions were the concierge, who was incredibly warm and kind, and the breakfast room staff (the breakfast buffet was outstanding). On the other end of the spectrum was the pool "guard" who was abrupt and borderline rude. When we first arrived at the hotel, we decided to check out the grounds. We wanted to see the actual palace part and check out the pool. When we walked towards the pool we were greeted with the guard brusquely telling us "you cannot take photos at the pool". Our cameras were around our necks and turned off. We weren't even contemplating photographing the pool. I said "we are guests, we've just arrived and aren't taking photos", to which he responded "yes - but you cannot take photos". A simple "good afternoon" or "welcome" would have been nice. I chalked it up to language differences, but it left a bad feeling with me for the rest of the afternoon. Two other challenges I had with this hotel were the cost of food (a simple club sandwich on the room service menu was approximately $40 -US) and location. Taxis are pretty much the only option here for most people. Istanbul traffic often renders taxis almost useless. We are walkers and didn't mind the long walk to the nearest tram stop. That said, the taxis associated with the hotel are outstanding, trustworthy and reliable. All in all, the hotel was fine, but it caters to a different type of traveler than me.

We deeply regret that you have had an unpleasant experience in the pool area and are thankful for receiving your constructive comments. Went for birthday brunch. Outstanding. Redefines choice quality presentation taste and service. Imaginative inspired blend of taste sensations even with Turkish options. Gracious attentive and charming service. A real treat with a breathtaking setting on the terrace. Phone ahead for a booking on the terrace. Worth it. They loved children and nothing was too much trouble. A must visit.

My wife and I have traveled a fair bit and have stayed in many luxury hotels in the US and overseas. This hotel, was, by far, THE ABSOLUTE FINEST HOTEL, that we have ever stayed in.
Granted it was very expensive ( e.g. Buffet Breakfast was 50 Euros per person), but it was absolutely worth it. The grounds are impeccable, the room and the view were fantastic and the food was terrific. Because of the civil unrest in Istanbul, we only ate at the hotel restaurants and ALL of them were outstanding. The Bosphorous Grill was an elaborate buffet with a huge selection of meats that one could choose from, in addition to a pasta bar, a Gyros section, Salad bar and so on. The ultimate Ottoman dining experience was at the Tugra restaurant.
Service was impeccable.
Highly recommended.

Room Tip: Even a "partial" water view room has very good views and are a little cheaper. Travel age...

I was told that the Kempinski was the best hotel in Istanbul but I now understand that I should have stayed at the Four Seasons instead.
The Hotel is tired and the rooms are average for the prices charged. The front desk staff are polite but lack the knowledge and savour faire needed for a truly 5 star establishment.
I don't think I will be coming back soon...

Room Tip: Choose a room with the river view

The Ciragan Kempinsky is a splendid hotel. Very expensive for sure – a spacious room with a full view of the Bosphorus – the best option - and a balcony (not a terrace, mind you, just a balcony), will set you back some € 1’650 ($ 2’200) a day, yet the view is simply magical: one can spend hours watching the ships go by, meditating on past centuries and the splendors of the Ottoman empire.
The Turkish restaurant of the hotel (the Tugra) is by far the best on the premises: the staff is courteous and helpful. The service is attentive and the food delicious. The other restaurants are unremarkable.
The pool is heated and spacious, with comfortable chairs and plenty of towels. The Spa is very nice.
Other things we found bizarre and even off putting: some of the staff do not speak English at all and hardly understand even the most basic words, although a supervisor pretends they are being trained “by a British teacher”. A young man at the pool did not understand the word “water” or its German, French, or Italian equivalent and only a gesture led him to deliver a bottle of the precious liquid, which he did promptly.
The prices at the bar are outrageous: a glass – not a bottle, a glass – of Richard Hennessy cognac is charged 850 Turkish liras (“TL”), a glass of Remy Martin Louis XIII TL 750, a glass of Chivas Regal 25 years 150 TL, etc. Now, that’s $ 450 and $ 400 for a glass of Cognac and $ 80 for a shot of (old) Chivas. Better stick to the excellent grappa, priced at a reasonable 40 TL….. When asked about these extravagant prices, a very amiable waiter who could not speak English simply said “Yes, Russian…” and one can only hope that he did not mean it.....
The hotel features a splendid open air grill on the Bosporus. The food is unremarkable, but the service very courteous and attentive. A buffet will cost some € 100 ($ 130) with a glass of wine, somewhat stiff for the rather bland food perhaps, but the place is incomparable. Incredibly, some manager has succeeded in completely ruining that restaurant by insisting on the presence of a disk jockey in the evening, who would pipe rock music through the loudspeakers and of course, the blaring techno thoroughly ruins what would otherwise be a perfect evening, eating on the Bosporus, listening to the waves, the wind and the passing ships. I complained immediately, with some result: after long explanations about the “need” for this nonsense, it was changed to some less ear piercing New Age harpsichord, equally bothering after a while and we were moved somewhat further away from the offending loudspeakers. If there were a Pulitzer price for bad taste and sheer incapacity to meet the expectations of one’s clients, the F&B manager in charge of this place fully deserves it.
Finally, an enquiry with the concierge about a boat ride produced a stunning € 250 an hour ($ 330) for a private boat and we left the place enthusiastic about the view, pleased by the polite and helpful staff, but feeling like whoever steps into this particular part of Istanbul should be really careful about a number of things……..

Room Tip: Take a room with full view of the Bosphorus and stay on the upper floors
