Owner description: The Basilica Cistern is the largest of several hundred ancient cisterns beneath the city that provided a water filtration system for the buildings nearby. This underground chamber measures approximately 138 meters (453 ft) by 64.6 meters (212 ft) and is capable of holding 80,000 cubic meters (2,800,000 cu ft) of water. The ceiling is supported by 336 marble columns.

Well worn a visit to admire the ancient architecture of this underground water store. Beautifully lit with dripping water, it has an atmosphere of it's own.

This was a pretty cool place to see. Very neat how this is all underground. The lighting and water made this place very nice. I would highly recommend visiting this if in Istanbul

Recently discovered and hidden below the old City of Constantinople is this treasure and what was the main water reservoir for the Walled City.

It is a very moving experience and you will likiely find yourself enchanted and going back in time thinking of what must have been in yesteryear.

Strangely romantic and moving................... not to be missed.

This underground tour was very worth it in an eerie way. Takes a couple of hours to walk through the cisterns. We had a fun / silly dress up photo taken of ourselves while down there. YOLO
