Owner description: The Basilica Cistern is the largest of several hundred ancient cisterns beneath the city that provided a water filtration system for the buildings nearby. This underground chamber measures approximately 138 meters (453 ft) by 64.6 meters (212 ft) and is capable of holding 80,000 cubic meters (2,800,000 cu ft) of water. The ceiling is supported by 336 marble columns.

The description doesn't properly sell the visit. Even though this is just a big underground water tank its got great history and is interesting to see. See where Sean Connery made From Russia With Love"". Well worth the modest entrance fee and right next to other major sights.

I didn't think if enjoy this as much as I did... Very cool very serene... Lovely lighting and soothing music. Amazing for cool photography ... I'd say better than the blue mosque and perhaps my 3rd fave attraction in the whole of Istanbul after the topikapi palace and the hagia sophia... Well worth the money!!!

This is interesting, but it's expensive to get in. It's relatively small, and it is dark and drippy. It's fascinating historically, but if you are on a budget at all, you can skip this and still go home happy.

Ancient, mysterious, impressive… easy to imagine James Bond or Indiana Jones here - or the ancient people who built it. A great break from the heat as well.
