Owner description: The Basilica Cistern is the largest of several hundred ancient cisterns beneath the city that provided a water filtration system for the buildings nearby. This underground chamber measures approximately 138 meters (453 ft) by 64.6 meters (212 ft) and is capable of holding 80,000 cubic meters (2,800,000 cu ft) of water. The ceiling is supported by 336 marble columns.

Enter into a cavern of dim light and caverns underground in the city of Istanbul. The Cistern was created to accumulate water and still remains as a tribute to the ancient abilities of those who built it many centuries ago. Well worth a visit especially if you can score tickets to any musical event that is scheduled in the Cistern... this would be an amazing experience.

This is a beautiful underground structure. Amazing engineering by the Romans and so beutiful to see the reflections of the columnss and arched ceilings in the water.

Very interesting architecture and piece of history. Amazing to see what happened during the Roman and Byzantine era in Istanbul. Make sure to see the Medusa Heads. The tickets seemed expensive for an underground visit with no guide but I would recommend it if you have time.

The history behind the basilica cistern is quite amazing, and the architecture is incredible. It is a must see for anyone visiting Istanbul. No need to get the audio while visiting, as it says the exact same things that the boards placed around the cistern. The medusa heads are pretty cool. Beware of the friendly people that give you information around this area, as they are just trying to get you into their rug shops. If you tell them you are from Montreal, they seem to leave you alone.

This is certainly a place worth visiting.
I found this to be unexpectedly lovely. They keep it incredibly clean.
It is a place not to be missed while visiting Istanbul.I would clearly rate it as my favorite amongst all the tourist attractions. The lightening adds to the beauty.Don't forget to look at the ' two medusa heads' & read their legend.
Higly recommended
